PAHO Celebrates World health Day
|
|
PAHO Office for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean held a reception at its headquarters in Barbados in celebration of World Health Day, April 7, 2016. During the event, Dr. Godfrey Xuereb, PAHO WHO Representative, presented copies of the WHO Global Report on Diabetes to Mr. John Boyce the Honourable Minister of Health and Sir Trevor Hassell, Chair of the Barbados National NCD Commission. In his remarks Dr. Xuereb highlighted diabetes statistics in Barbados and pledged PAHO's ongoing provision of technical assistance in prevention and control of diabetes.

During the event attended by members of the diplomatic community and members of other UN agencies in Barbados, guests were afforded the opportunity to have NCD screening and were provided with diabetes/NCD resource packs.

WHO Global Report on Diabetes
|
|
On the occasion of World Health Day 2016, WHO issues a call for action on diabetes, drawing attention to the need to step up prevention and treatment of the disease. The first WHO Global report on diabetes demonstrates that the number of adults living with diabetes has almost quadrupled since 1980 to 422 million adults. Factors driving this dramatic rise include overweight and obesity. In 2012 alone diabetes caused 1.5 million deaths. Its complications can lead to heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure and lower limb amputation. Read more

CARPHA - Diabetes: A Big Problem for Years to Come
|
|
Studies conducted by the University of the West Indies (UWI) estimate that 1 in every 4 adults in some Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries have diabetes. More worrying is the doubling of overweight and obesity in children less than five years, along with the high rates in adolescence, as obesity is one of the major risk factors for Type 2 Diabetes. Studies also revealed that both obesity and diabetes tend to be significantly higher in women than in men, with, on average, women being twice as likely to be obese and 60 per cent more likely to have diabetes. Antigua and Barbuda Diabetes Association in collaboration with The Lions Club of Antigua held a World Health Day Zumbathon and Socarobix at the LIONs Den. It was a great day which ended with an exercise session with close to 120 persons taking part.

The St. Vincent & the Grenadines Ministry of Health Celebrates World Health Day
|
|
World Health Day under the theme “Step Up, Beat Diabetes” was celebrated on April 7th, 2016. To commemorate the day, the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment in SVG hosted a Diabetes Health Fair at two venues, the Central Vegetable Market, Kingstown, and the Chateaubelair Playing Field. Activities included free blood sugar and blood pressure checks, free foot care screening, audiology checks, nutrition counseling, exercise live demonstrations and medication counseling. Get Women Moving Campaign Launched on WHD
|
|
Women in Barbados will be fitter, healthier and less likely to develop diabetes and other non-communicable diseases if the Get Women Moving campaign gets off the ground. Launched during a World Health Day event in the capital Bridgetown on Thursday, the programme is promoting a simple idea: provide inexpensive exercise and dance classes for women across the island. Haiti Youth Diabetes Camp 2016

21st - 23rd March 2016 more than one hundred young people with diabetes type 1 participated in the fifth edition of the FHADIMAC lead "Camp de l'Amitié" 2016. Read more (see a video of the 2015 camp here)

Women And Diabetes Interactive Lecture
|
|
In observation of World Health Day the Barbados Diabetes Foundation & The Business & Professional Women's Club of Barbados held an interactive lecture discussing topics such as the female predicament, living and working with diabetes, depression, sexual health and more. Promoters of the event Hibiscus Health Caribbean Inc. and the Barbados Diabetes Foundation are also running a Nursing in Diabetes Workshop over two days. Newly Appointed Australian Ambassador to the Caribbean Community John Pilbean Pays Introductory Visit to HCC President and Executive Director
|
|
The HCC continued to strenghten ties with the Australian High Commission on Friday April 8, 2016 when the President and Executive Director met at the HCC Secretariat with the newly appointed Australian High Commissioner (HC) to Trinidad and Tobago. HC Pilbeam is also accredited as the Australian Ambassador to the Caribbean Community with responsibility for Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname. HC Pilbeam replaces outgoing High Commissioner Ross Tysoe AO and joined the Trinidad office in February 2016.
The HCC is receiving its third year of funding with the Australian Direct Aid Program in support of various multi-country civil society strengthening initiatives in the areas of cervical cancer and blood pressure control. The current grant supports cervical cancer prevention and control efforts through civil society organisations in Belize, Guyana and Haiti.
