Update on Road Markings on Junction 5 of Ring Road

In our 13th March update, we reported that a resident was concerned that the new road markings at junction 5 only showed Cheylesmore via Mile Lane.

Hazel contacted the relevant department who agreed that the markings were not quite accurate.

As the picture shows this situation has now been rectified.

JLR Planning Meeting Date Change
The Meeting to discuss JLR Planning Application for Whitley South  is now on Tuesday 26th April.

Do Not Feed the Birds

Signs are now up around Quinton Pool saying that fines may be issued for feeding the birds.

These drastic measures have been taken to discourage the dumping of large quantities of food around the pools.

Whitley Residents & Neighbourhood Watch Association Meeting
The next meeting is on the 13th April at 7pm at the Whitley Community Centre.
Topics on the agenda:
  • the new primary school proposal;
  • the JLR development;
  • the parking and traffic related issues;
  • plus AOB.
"The bigger the attendance the more notice those in authority have to take"

Wildflowers in the Area
Some residents have contacted Hazel saying that the London Road/ Allard Way Island is ‘yellow’ and asked if it had been sprayed with weedkiller?

Hazel was informed that this island is included in this year’s “Wildflowers Project”. Like the other sites it has been sprayed with herbicide so the grass is dying off. The sites will be cultivated in a couple of weeks and shortly thereafter will be ‘hydroseeded’. The seeds germinate quickly and the first flowers should be seen in mid-late May.

There is also a ‘ribbon’ of yellow grass along much of the London Road central reservation; this is another area to be sown with wildflowers. In this instance, the majority of the central reservation will be killed off, however only the ‘ribbon’ will be cultivated and sown. This will mean there is a 0.5m strip either side of the carriageway that will be largely bare earth. This will ensure visibility for drivers without having to have mowers cutting just the edges.

Petition to include Lichfield Road in the Parking Scheme
This week Roger put in a residents’ petition for Lichfield Road to be included in the Residents’ Parking Scheme.

The Council proposes to take this petition to the Cabinet Member for Public Services on a date to be confirmed.

Save our Trees Update
In our 21st February update, we reported how Roger and Mark managed to stop the felling of some of the trees on Black Prince Avenue/ Poitiers Road. A tree had already been cut down and all the branches were removed from another before the work was stopped.

One of the trees that Whitefriars said was causing a damp problem has now been pruned.

Roger, supported by the tree wardens, are having a meeting with Whitefriars this week to discuss the future of some more trees on their land.

Our local tree wardens are worried by people's lack of understanding of the importance of trees to our environment.

A45/A46 Tollbar End Improvement Scheme - West Bridge Opening
From Alan Jones, Galliford Try
I am writing to advise you that we are planning to open the new west bridge at Tollbar Roundabout to traffic by 6am on Monday 11 April. This marks significant progress as it allows traffic on west side of the roundabout to be transferred from the existing carriageway onto the new west bridge – following the final layout on this side of the roundabout.

All parties are continuing to work hard to open the project to traffic by December 2016.

Paul Nagra, Project Manager at Highways England, said: “The opening of the west bridge is a key milestone for the scheme, allowing us to start excavating through the existing roundabout to form the underpass.

“Due to the change in road layout, I’d like to remind drivers to take extra care, follow the road signs and observe the speed limit to keep themselves and our road workers safe.

“I’d also like to advise drivers to allow extra time for their journeys while people get accustomed to the new roundabout layout.”

As part of the bridge opening, pedestrian and cycle routes around the roundabout will also change. A series of maps have been placed across the roundabout to aid pedestrians and cyclists, and people can visit the
A45/A46 Tollbar End improvement scheme website to view the map and plan their journey ahead of time.

Overnight closures of the A45 Stonebridge Highway between Stivichall Junction and Tollbar Roundabout will be required between 8pm and 6am every night from Thursday 7 April until the bridge opens on the morning of Monday 11 April. Diversions will be clearly signed.

The planned opening is subject to change in the event of adverse weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.

Swan Nesting on Island

Our swan has again made her nest with the aid of the bale of straw. We wonder how many young she'll raise this year?

Southport Close Left Untidy Following Gas Works - Update
Balfour Beatty arranged for the site to be jet washed as they felt that a road sweeper might create more damage. Hazel was assured that the Council would not be paying for the site to be cleaned.

Upcoming Road Works in our Area

Pink Graffiti on Pedestrian Bridge
A resident informed Hazel that some pink graffiti had been painted on the green pedestrian bridge over the London Road into Whitley Village. It was pointed out that due to the great colour contrast and it being a main road into the City, it was very unsightly. We've been informed that the problem has been rectified.

Whitley Juniors Football Club – “Save our Pitch”
A concerned parent has asked us to insert this:
I help to run a local football club Whitley Juniors Football club based at Chace Ave. This club has been going since 1980 and have helped thousands of children to play football over the years and we want this to continue.
Can you please help as planning has gone in for houses around our pitches. If it goes ahead we will lose access to the ground and also we won’t be able to use our changing rooms. This will affect hundreds of children from the age of 6-17 who currently play football for the club. To help:
please click here to see the planning application. Click on the yellow box with ‘Comment on this Application’ and a form will appear - you just fill it in and your objection will be registered.
Try and get as many parents to do it then it will show them that we are not going away. The application closes 21/4/06

Travellers at the Memorial Park –Clean Up continues
Mark’s video and pictures of the travellers, in last week’s update, raised a lot of media interest. He was contacted by both the Coventry Telegraph & the Observer for his viewpoint and pictures. As a result of this here are the Coventry Telegraph & the Observer articles.
In case you didn’t have chance to watch the video last week then here’s the link again.
