4/13 - LIVE BAND NIGHT at Nyoh's with 9th STREET STOMPERS

We're wildly lucky to be hosting the 9th Street Stompers as they play for SwingColumbus for the first time!

The 9th Street Stompers are an outfit of well-dressed no-counts chopping on acoustic instruments and singing about life, death, love, and liquor. Hailing from Chattanooga, Tennessee, they cull up the musical scenery of an era when the lines between swing, gypsy jazz, blues, rockabilly, and tango weren’t nearly as hard and fast as the drinking and dancing. Steering clear of much of the novelty and kitsch associated with pre-war music, they choose to demonstrate the modern relevance of their chosen medium.

With Skip Frontz Jr. furiously slapping the string bass and Lon Eldridge on blues finger-style resonator guitar, ukulele, and kazoo, they share vocal duties. Dalton Chapman is a Gypsy Swing virtuoso who diligently studied the great Django Reinhardt and finally, the always enchanting Sampire swings the brush snare with the grace and finesse of a sultry metronome. If her drumming doesn't catch your attention, her eyes certainly will.

5/4 - SWINGCOLUMBUS OPEN HOUSE

MONTHLY LESSON SERIES

5/4 - CHARLESTON BASICS with Anna and Lee

Charleston is one of the highest energy, fun forms of swing dancing, and now is your chance to learn it from scratch! Anna Young and Lee Conley will be starting with the fundamentals and teaching you all you need to know to start incorporating this fantastic fast dance into your repertoire!

The series starts Wednesday, May 4th, at 6:30, at Nyoh's Buckeye Bar & Grill. Pricing is $40 for members and students, and $45 for the general public; price for the monthly series includes FREE admission to Swingin' Wednesdays, along with the FREE East Coast basics lesson before the dance!

Why We Travel

If you ask dancers who take their swing seriously - either as a hardcore hobby or at a professional level - what it was that got them hooked on swing dancing, one of the most common answers is "traveling."

But what IS traveling for swing dance events? If you're new to a scene the concept can easily sound overwhelming; carpooling, housing, workshops - it's all new, and it's a lot! But fear not! This post is here to break down the process for dancers who are new to the idea, as well as provide encouragement and insight from other dancers around the midwest!
