Hey <<First Name>>,

Hope this finds you well.
I've been ridiculously busy, but I've been able to enjoy about a week off this past week (have a few days left), so I wanted to spend some quality time on this newsletter and start planning the revamp of the web site that's coming up soon - and a boatload of other things. This thing looks a little better, yeah?

The super exciting cause for all this time off is - I feel like there needs to be a drumroll right now - I'm finally getting a new tablet. squeeee

I haven't had one in close to 4 years now, and really I've been perfectly okay without it until recently. I've been pushing myself to improve my traditional art; not just improve technique but break out of my comfort zone as well. That is, to create backgrounds and environments - the kind of thing I've always had a lot of issues with that are far too lengthy to detail here. In the past, painting digitally was a means of working out some finer detail before I committed paint to canvas. Not having that aspect of the creative process with the current endeavours has been seriously difficult. I've tried everything. Then, finally, the other day I found a wonderfully affordable tablet and snagged it.

I'm so excited! I'm also really rusty, but I feel like it's gonna be a nice game changer.

I'm still working through the technical aspects of the techniques I've learned and I feel like the resulting work is pretty boring. I promise it won't be like this forever!

Aside from the biblical-esque piece, the most recent visions have been taking me down a more fantasy based realm. I've got a few sketches going, but have hit a wall with them too that the tablet will get me past. I can't even begin to express how frustrating it's been hitting so many walls with so many pieces simply because I'm trying to improve my work... and because I'm a big ol' chicken shit and can't just throw some paint on the canvas and see what happens. I did that over the winter.. and am currently sanding that thing down so I can reuse it. I think that pretty well destroyed the confidence I had to experiment like that.

I had planned on having more "real" work done by now. Spring is coming and I've already been fighting off the Crafty Muse. I gave my kitchen a little facelift, started working on a spring wreath, and the bug to do some jewelry has been creeping in. I'll generally go wherever the Muse takes me, but I'm super driven to accomplish certain painting goals. Ideally I'd like to devote the rest of the year exclusively to it. We'll see how it all goes, but that's my hope.

Work In Progress | No title yet
36" oil on round pine panel

I've been studying some classic (mostly Flemish) techniques. This piece will kind of culminate everything I've learned and will hopefully have that "biblical art" feel, ala da Vinci-esque. Fingers crossed!

I got hold of a pallet. Then I found this amazing oil based gel stain. Then I gave my entire spice collection a makeover. I'm too biased to know if it actually looks good, but I had a blast making it.

Kaylee likes to keep me from working as much as possible, in any way possible.
