The Big Tree – R.I.P.

This summer we are honouring a sentinel of the past with two exciting exhibits. A cross section of the iconic Bartholomew Road old growth fir tree, which came down last summer, will be permanently mounted in the Museum’s Heritage Garden, and its story told in a new feature exhibit.  As part of the presentation, Cortes artist/photographer David Ellingsen, recently featured online by National Geographic, will share from his photographic exhibition: The Last StandThe display will also explore the importance of old growth forests to First Nations, the environment and early logging on Cortes.

 Reel Youth FOCI Program

The Cortes Museum supports the worthwhile Reel Youth project involving youth filming seniors and their stories pertaining to Cortes history.

Capturing community elders on film provides an enriching experience for all the participants, besides recording history in a very visible way. Copies of these informative vignettes have been entered into the Museum’s Archives collection and they are now available to view on our website: www.cortesmuseum.com/celebrating-seniors/

Exciting Trips on Misty Isles !

Visit Twin Islands!

New this year - Twin Islands!  Explore private islands and walk in the footsteps of Royalty this summer on cruises aboard the schooner Misty Isles. Twin Islands off the southeast shore of Cortes is where the Queen and Prince Philip have enjoyed relaxing holidays away from public eyes during visits to Canada. These small islands were once owned by relatives of Prince Philip. Completely self sustaining, there are amazing gardens, a barn, outbuildings, a swimming compound and an impressive log lodge to tour while you relax, enjoy, and spend a night walking down the same hallway as Royalty once did.  For more information on these exciting cruises see our website!
