April Newsletter

Firestone Walker Brewing Co. and Crown Distributors reps will be at the April LBG meeting! The tasting also will feature Firestone Walker beers. Let's pack the church!
Our friends at Crane Brewing Co. have invited the LBG (and our guests) to tour their facility in Raytown! You’re welcome to meet us there or meet in Lawrence beforehand to carpool (those carpooling will decide amongst themselves how to split gas, what time to return, etc). Guests and members of other homebrew clubs are welcome.

What do you need to bring?
– $5/person for the tour (this is a half-price discount)
– taster glass
– beer to share (if you want)

Saturday, April 23
1:45 p.m. – Carpoolers meet at the I-70 Business Center, 1035 N. Third St., Lawrence
2 p.m. – Leave Lawrence
2:50 p.m. – Arrive at Crane Brewing Co.
3 p.m. – Tour (to-go bottles will be available to purchase)
After – Those wanting to return home can do so. Those wanting to visit another brewery or restaurant are welcome to do so. If we want to go somewhere else as a group, please throw out your ideas.

Each person is responsible for having a designated driver. The LBG is not responsible for providing transportation or any other costs associated with the day.

Please let Jenalea know if you plan to attend so we can provide an accurate headcount! Check out the forum thread or Facebook event

Maifest, one of the LBG’s annual events, is just around the corner! The day – known by the American Homebrewers Association as Big Brew – celebrates National Homebrew Day and takes place the first Saturday in May. Read more about it here.

When: 11 a.m. Saturday, May 7
Where: X Bar Ranch, 1348 N. 550th Road, Baldwin City (home of Sean Belden and Sherry Warren)
What to bring: Sean will cook the main dish (paid for by the guild). Please bring a side or dessert and beer to share. Taps will be available, so kegs are fine. Bring lawn chairs. Dogs are welcome as long as they have a leash until they meet Sean’s dogs.
Brewing: People are welcome to brew. Sean has water and power, but you'll need to supply your own water hoses, filter and other gear. Anyone interested?

Let us know if you have any questions! Thanks again to Sean and Sherry for opening their home to us! Check out the forum thread or Facebook event.

The LBG met March 10 for its monthly meeting. Vice President James Taylor led the seminar on water. Biermeister Bob Dieterle led the tasting on English ales. Miss the meeting? Read the minutes here. Check out our Facebook page and website for more photos from the meeting.

Pints for Pet info is posted on the forum.

We've set up PayPal links directly connected to our account to make paying your membership dues even easier. If you haven't already paid for 2016, click the appropriate link below to do so. It helps to add your name and "member dues" to the comments, and let us know if any of your info has changed.

If you volunteered to serve on a committee related to the 2016 budget survey ideas, please work on an update to be given at an upcoming meeting. To jog your memories, those are:
  • Church projector -- Frank/Jenalea (we should be ready to make a decision on this at the April meeting)
  • Food and beer pairings -- Dale and Chris (Dale could use some help on the charcuterie side of things if that interests you)
  • LBG competition -- Matt B., Courtney, Murphy, the Shaws (and some others who have talked directly to Matt)
  • Equipment-related items -- Andy, Chuck, Galen, Matt B. and Duane R.
  • Social brew days -- Cathy/Jenalea (a few will be announced soon when the group brews for the tastings are scheduled)
  • Bus trips -- Neal (update planned for the April meeting)
Hope to see many of you at all the great beer events coming up -- the tour of Crane, Parkville Microbrew Festival, Maifest, Pints for Pets and more! :)

Looking forward to seeing you at the April 14 meeting! Cheers! — Jenalea
