A Few Words About the Wallant Award

Last week something special took place at the University of Hartford: the latest Wallant Award ceremony. As a press release noted, "Established more than 50 years ago, in 1963, by Dr. and Mrs. Irving Waltman of West Hartford to honor the memory of the late Edward Lewis Wallant, author of The Pawnbroker and other works of fiction, the Wallant Award is today one of the oldest and most prestigious Jewish literary awards in the United States. It is presented to a Jewish writer, preferably unrecognized, whose published work of fiction is deemed to have significance for the American Jew."

In addition to celebrating this year's awardee (Rebecca Dinerstein, recognized for her debut novel The Sunlit Night), this year's program included several other components. There was a special tribute to Mark Shechner, an award judge (and early friend of FTB) who passed away last October. And there were remembrances, too, of past honoree Ehud Havazelet (1955-2015) and Dr. Waltman, who passed away in January at the age of 100.

Mention was also made of our recent re-issue of Wallant's classic novel The Pawnbroker—which features a new foreword by Dara Horn, a past winner of the award given in Wallant's name. (You can read that foreword, by the way, on our website.) We are proud to be continuing to make the work of Edward Lewis Wallant available to and known by a new generation of readers.
