Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project
The snow has left the ground, the days are getting warmer, and we are looking forward to seeing the excited faces of people who are coming to our Spring public tours of the Wells Petroglyph Preserve.
April is always tour-heavy and this year, thanks to the amazing efforts of Esta and Judith, we are expecting visits from three local school groups in April alone. Being a docent is such satisfying work and we are always looking for people who might like to volunteer for this position.

MPPP in the Press!
Be sure to pick up a copy of the May issue of New Mexico Magazine. MPPP is one of the feature stories that an estimated 500,000 readers from New Mexico and other states will read. We are anticipating that more people than ever will be eager to know more about our amazing petroglyph site, and will want to come and see it for themselves. New Mexico Magazine has spread the word about our state since 1923 and is one of the secret weapons in New Mexico Tourism’s arsenal. Many thanks to Deborah Busemeyer for writing the article and to Dave Herndon for including us!

Raising Friends and Influencing People!
Last Sunday 35 invited guests from the Ojo Caliente and Abiquiu area joined us at the newly-opened Origin Retreat Center for afternoon cocktails, a wonderful selection of appetizers and a little glimpse into what MPPP is all about. Origin, which is located on the west escarpment of Mesa Prieta, has its own cache of petroglyphs on the 200-acre property – which Jana Comstock, Megan Delano, Amy Montoya, Brent Lambert and Jennifer Goyette are currently recording - as well as a spectacular Ra Paulette cave: Windows of the Earth Cave Sanctuary. Origin’s owner, Jill Edelman, was happy to lead a tour to the cave for the guests. Many thanks to Jill, Stacy Kinsley and Casas de Santa Fe for hosting this wonderful afternoon!
More Flute Players!
In February we launched a campaign to encourage our donors to join our Flute Player Society. Each Flute Player Society member receives enjoy advance notification of our unique events, a gratitude listing on our website, a beautiful flute player pin, a private tour for ten of the Wells Petroglyph Preserve and an invitation for two to our exciting appreciation event when they contribute. More importantly, members enjoy knowing that their three-year commitment to give $1000 a year ensures that our important work on Mesa Prieta continues. We are thrilled that two individuals and two couples recently accepted our invitation to join! We look forward to seeing them at our special gratitude event in June. It’s never too late to become a Flute Player Society member – find out more about joining us!
Hello and Goodbye!
Spring is always a time for change and renewal. At the MPPP March meeting of our Board of Directors we said goodbye to some of our board members and hello to some new ones. Retired lawyer, Abiquiu resident and new Board member, Dan Gonzales, takes over from Steve Jenison as Board President. Sue Johnston, a retired financial expert, also new to the Board, assumes the Treasurer position from Candy Berry. Norm Doggett, who has been on the Board since 2015, comes on to the Executive Council as Secretary, taking over from John Guth. Welcome to our new Executive Board members!
We also want to say a BIG thank you to the Board members who are leaving us. MPPP has seen rapid growth in the last few years and our retiring board members have worked tirelessly to guide us through this period. Heartfelt thanks to Steve Jenison, Candy Berry, John Guth and Anna Naruta-Moya for their many contributions!
Video News
Preproduction is underway for our new video! Abiquiu-based Convivial Studio has been contracted to produce a short video about our activities and programs. Convivial most recently produced a beautiful film for EVFAC, and are working on a documentary for the people of Shiprock. You can look at their website portfolio to see the beautiful work they produce. However, we still need funding to complete the project. If you’ve had any thoughts about supporting a specific area of our organization, and are interested in film, this might be a good area for your donation. Stay tuned for ongoing news as we move towards production.

What we Found in 2015!
Candie Borduin, MPPP’s Recording Team Coordinator will return to Los Luceros on Tuesday, April 26 at 6:30pm to present Highlights of Petroglyph Recording in 2015,  a rare opportunity for people to see some of the amazing petroglyphs that our dedicated volunteer recorders have discovered on the Mesa’s private land. Candie’s presentation last year was completely packed with people eager to see the images. This year we expect the same enthusiasm. Candie will present ‘the best of the best’ – 75 images selected by the recorders themselves from the hundreds of petroglyphs found on private land not usually seen by the general public. Make sure to come early to find a seat!
