Mr Harrison's blog
The summer term began in typically British fashion – glorious sunshine one day and heavy downpours the next (as the Key Stage 2 children will testify after Friday’s games session!). However, the rain has done nothing to dampen the children’s spirits and it has been great to get underway again and to begin the final term of the school year – and the final term at Weston Green for some of the children , notably Year 6 who will shortly move on to Senior School.

Kindergarten’s Forest
School Adventures |
Every Thursday, children in Kindergarten can enjoy a trip to local woodland, as part of our new Forest School programme which started last month. Led by Miss Carter, the sessions allow the children to explore their natural surroundings and take part in a wide range of hands-on activities, with a wealth of benefits. Watch our short video to find out more. |

Scientists at work in Reception |
There is no doubt that the chemistry has changed around the early years building this week. The levels of excitement began to increase when the children participated in a whole school assembly on Monday morning and met scientist Boffin Lou who shared some awe inspiring chemistry demonstrations. |

A trip to Kew Gardens |
Year 1 had a wonderful start to the summer term with an exciting trip to Kew Gardens. With the sun shining, the children couldn’t wait to begin their ‘Plant Hunters’ workshop and explore the different areas of the garden. Guided by a member of the Kew Garden’s staff, the children searched far and wide to see if they could identify different parts of a plant and collect them. |

Magenta principles |
In school at the moment, we are having a big focus on how to teach lessons in different and cross-curricular ways, using a set of principles know as the Magenta principles. It's all about getting children to talk and do; how can the children interact with information that they are given to remember it and use it in interesting ways?

Anyone for tennis? |
As the shining sun signalled the beginning of the summer term, how lucky for Years 4 and 6 that it was their turn for tennis lessons. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed their first session, as they looked to improve upon the skills learned last year; all that seemed to be missing was the strawberries! Who knows, maybe there is a future Wimbledon winner in our midst?

Science week |
Science week launched with a fizz, bang and pop during Monday’s assembly. ‘Boffin Lou’ demonstrated various experiments that foamed, whizzed and steamed, carefully explaining after each experiment the simple scientific reactions behind each one. The children gasped in amazement at their favourite experiment called ‘Elephants Toothpaste’ a simple, yet entertaining reaction caused by hydrogen peroxide. Assembly was followed by workshops lead by the visitor which ranged from blasting off rockets to experimenting with plasma balls and playful polymers. The day ended with Weston Green’s first intergalactic space journey when the Science Boffin and pupils (sorry, astrophysicists) launched a rocket from the school playground. Fuelled by excitement each class then took on their own experiment, which they will share with the whole school on Friday morning.

Travel plan |
This week has been ‘Science Week’ in which the children have been exploring our amazing world with the help of their teachers and the ‘Science Boffins’ workshop. This, together with their projects, has allowed them to find out more about how things work and about some of the scientists who have helped to shape the modern world. Man is a most creative animal and constantly finds ways of overcoming problems – in many ways, that creativity is what helps define us. One of the major issues which we shall need to solve how we travel without causing irreparable damage to this beautiful world. As ever, it is not just about what we have as an option but our responses and choices with reference to those options.
