Welcome to the SpringE

From the Headmistress

We have been focusing on the environment in the last two weeks as we lead up to Earth Day, with assemblies about climate, sustainability, recycling and generally celebrating the amazing diversity of the planet and ways we can all live more sustainably. This culminated today in the planting of a native tree species which was voted for by the children. The tree we have chosen is an Amalanchier Lamarckii which is a small tree with lovely white flowers and produces small berries (non poisonous) in the summer which the birds enjoy. It also has distinctive foliage in the Spring and Autumn and is a lasting way to mark Earth Day's focus of 'sustain' this year.

Yesterday we marked the Queen's 90th birthday and sang Happy Birthday to her at lunch with a special cake decorated with icing crowns. The Brownies also had cake to celebrate at the end of the day so all in all it was a true celebration, Springfield style.

I have been looking at a variety of children's work around the School this week and I am delighted to see so much progress in children's books. Year Four have really improved their handwriting and presentation and Year Two have made excellent progress with their Maths in the lessons I observed. I take great pleasure in watching children and their teachers at work and play, it is such a delight to see their enthusiasm channelled into effective learning or the enjoyment of being with friends on the paddock.

Have a super weekend

Saxon Adventures
This week Year Four have been 'Saxon settlers’. On Wednesday we were at Bishops Wood outdoor centre and ready for a fun day of learning. The children were all dressed in Saxon attire and ready for a day of being a Saxon.

We gathered our belongings from our home country, including our small livestock, and set sail for Britannia. After struggling to follow the navigators instructions, we finally arrived. Unfortunately the boat was a little smelly after so long at sea. We walked for a while and finally got to sit in a Saxon hall, make pots, brooches, and woven wool and even played a Saxon game. After lunch, we imagined what it would be like on a stage shore and if we didn’t have a hall to meet in. We made temporary shelters to spend the night in and told stories around the camp fire.

The children along with both Mrs Walker and I enjoyed the day immensely.

Birthday Wishes
At our Brownie meeting tonight we raised a glass to Her Majesty the Queen to wish her Happy Birthday. The Brownies were asked to draw a portrait of the Queen, which Brown Owl reduced to make a special birthday card. The card will be sent to Buckingham Palace over the weekend. The Brownies earned a Birthday Badge to sew on their sashes.

Dragonflies Under The Sea
This week in Dragonflies we have been busy producing excellent artwork as part of our underwater topic. The children carefully explored the shapes and colours of different sea creatures and have experimented with oil pastels in order to replicate their favourite marine life. Exploring underwater endangered species has provoked some interesting discussions amongst the children. They have then used  this knowledge to produce facts about Hector dolphins, Cape penguins and Hammerhead sharks. The children also have enjoyed listening to the story of  'Sharing a Shell'  by Julia Donaldson as part of their circle time and have loved discussing their thoughts about the importance of sharing.
