It’s odd to think that there are parts of our school year that are starting to wrap up.  Our final enrichment classes are ending, students are preparing for the Spring Concert and 6th grade cap and gowns have been delivered and t-shirts are ready for the 6th grade vs. senior kickball game.  It’s an exciting time of year but it makes me sad to think that the school year is just about over.

Psalm 103:2
Praise the LORD, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—

This week was a little different than the others. Since it was Earth week, we focused on that all week. During class, we planted grass in a cup, made flowers using tissue paper and egg cartons, used a plate and paint to make an Earth stamp, picked up litter outside the school, and went on a nature walk. For science, we all became engineers and worked in teams to design and build different objects made out of recyclable objects! It was a fun week learning more about how to take care of our earth. Happy Earth Day!!

The Kinder Kids worked with the letter Jj this week, we even ate Jello jigglers from Alice! We also added two more words to our word wall.  In math we are learning subtraction.  We celebrated Britney Woodke's Wonderful Week---on Thursday we went out to the Woodke farm, everyone enjoyed that.

This week in reading we focused on words with -oi and -oy.  We also worked with words that have the prefixes re- and un-.  We read stories about how animals grow and change.  In math we are working hard on 2-digit addition.  We did some Earth week activities in science and learned how we can help take care of the Earth.

The second graders have been reading stories about desert life this week.  We have read about several desert animals and how they survive living in the desert.  We learned that the spadefoot toad digs down underground.  It waits for rain and then lays its eggs in a rain puddle.  The tadpoles hatch in two days and then continue growing into toads.  The process takes a very short period of time since the water will dry up quickly in the desert.  In Science class we  have learned some facts about the planets in our solar system.  We also learned that the rotating of the Earth causes day and night.  We found out that the moon's light comes from the sun and that the moon appears to have many phases depending on how much of the lit up part of the moon is facing us on Earth.  We also had a fun time learning more about transportation from our UMM practicum student Kari.  We are also getting excited for our First Communion on May 1st.

In the third grade classroom we had a busy week. In math we are still focusing on fractions and we are even solving word problems that involve fractions. In grammar we are learning about adjectives and adverbs. In science we are learning about light and even did a few experiments. Also, this week when Nurse Folkman visited she showed us how an AED works and talked a little about water safety.

This week in fourth grade we have started to add and subtract fractions with like denominators. We are also learning how to put these fractions into simplest form. In social studies we have started to research an explorer of our choice, and we will be creating an explorer trading card to tell everyone all about them. In reading class we are comparing and contrasting Texas, the setting of our book "Holes", to our home state of Minnesota on our Chromebooks.

This week the fifth graders got to go to Safety Day at the Lee Community Center. We learned about ag safety, lawn mower safety, gas safety, livestock safety, pet safety, electric safety, first aid, and fire safety. The students had a fun day learning how to be safe. We also read a story called "Miss Alaineus," a vocabulary disaster story. The students enjoyed this funny story and caught on to the irony in the story. We also had Chris Codden from the St. Cloud Diocese come and talk to the students about growing and developing as a child of God. She did an excellent job explaining changes we go through, and how we are made as an image of God.

Sixth grade has been busy this week. We spent a lot of time in reading class learning about Leonardo da Vinci. We talked about the Mona Lisa, The Last Supper, and a giant bronze horse that he planned but never completed. We even read about his original plans for what was basically the world's first helicopter before debating whether or not he ever actually tried it out. We're learning about area in math right now, which means there are a lot of formulas we need to know. In science class, Mr P let us skip the second half of the chapter we were on so we could start designing our science fair projects. And Mrs Kehoe had us watch a movie about Jackie Robinson in social studies. It's been a really fun week. Hopefully the last month of sixth grade can be as much fun as this week has been.
