Year 2 - May
It feels a little early to prepare Veni Sancte Spiritus, but Pentecost is on May 15!

The usual focus for May is on Marian hymns. If you have a May shrine, this is the month to make sure there are flowers placed there in her honor. You and your family could start your days with a hymn to Mary. A perfect hymn for May crownings is Bring Flowers of the Fairest

Sequence: Veni Sancte Spiritus

Gregorian chant: Words with Wings - the lessons cover Regina Caeli and Veni Sancte Spiritus

Gregorian score found here on Gregobase.
Printable Music with Translation PDF
The score above was found here at Corpus Christi Watershed. There is a recording available on this page of a Medieval variant of the sequence. It's nice to listen to. See if you can hear the differences between what's sung today versus c.1385 A.D.

Sequence: Veni Sancte Spiritus
Text attributed to several authors, but most likely Stephen Langton (d 1228)
One of the five liturgical Sequences

LATIN TEXT:

Veni, Sancte Spiritus,
et emitte caelitus
lucis tuae radium.

Veni, pater pauperum,
veni, dator munerum
veni, lumen cordium.

Consolator optime,
dulcis hospes animae,
dulce refrigerium.

In labore requies,
in aestu temperies
in fletu solatium.

O lux beatissima,
reple cordis intima
tuorum fidelium.

Sine tuo numine,
nihil est in homine,
nihil est innoxium.

Lava quod est sordidum,
riga quod est aridum,
sana quod est saucium.

Flecte quod est rigidum,
fove quod est frigidum,
rege quod est devium.

Da tuis fidelibus,
in te confidentibus,
sacrum septenarium.

Da virtutis meritum,
da salutis exitum,
da perenne gaudium, Amen, Alleluia.

Gregorian Chant
April Lessons:
  • 4 Lessons and corresponding Workbook Pages (we're on Lessons 17-20)
  • Their version of Veni Sancte Spiritus in the last 3 lessons differs from what we are personally familiar with, so I plan on only doing lesson 17 (Regina Caeli) and maybe we'll do lessons 18-20 next month to continue learning the sequence, but with their different melody.
  • Audio files (the lessons tell you when to listen online)
Extra Listening for Enjoyment:

  • Chant Kyriale (CCWatershed) - did you know there are 18 different Gregorian Mass settings?

Connect on the Google+ Community

I started a Google+ community for these studies. This has great potential for being a place to: 1) discuss the music we are learning each month, and 2) share our learning experiences with others. I think it would be helpful if Q&A, interesting facts found, or other helpful information could be easily seen and discussed by all.  Think of it as an online study and support group.

Let's enjoy this learning experience together!

If you are new to Google+,  here's a great tutorial on getting started
