FROM FESTIVAL HQ

Dear Readers,

One week ago, it was my great delight to introduce Tobias Wolff and to welcome many of you to the 2016 Festival of Faith & Writing at our opening keynote. I’d never spoken to so many people before and expected to be shaking in my sneakers when it came time to walk up on stage. Instead, when I got up to the podium I felt the first wave of the joyous energy that would propel us all through the next three days of lectures and readings, mishaps and moments of transcendence.

Thank you all for showing up to the Festival with your enthusiasm, your curiosity, and your grace. In the coming weeks we’ll be sharing photos, quotes, and favorite memories (yours and ours) from #FFWgr2016 here in Bookkeeping

This week we’re catching up on sleep and homework. And so I’ll keep this short and sweet: congratulations to Morgan Walker! Her 2016 FFW Bingo Card was selected at random, and she’ll get a free pass to the 2018 Festival of Faith & Writing! Many thanks to everyone who played and provided helpful feedback on their cards. If you didn’t fill out our bingo/comment card, we invite you send your Festival feedback to ffw@calvin.edu.

Warmly,

“I brought home a lot of great things from the Festival, but this was by far the best: Each morning when I wake, I am the celebrant in a liturgy that leads me through the sacrament of Creation.”

“We noticed everywhere at this conference a real hunger for and attraction to the things we love about the Catholic Church. Mystery. Magic. A place where darkness and suffering are not denied but transformed into meaning and beauty.”

“What makes the Festival special is the mix of things that happen here. You can go to a workshop on screenwriting and then attend a George Saunders interview and then listen to Scott Cairns read his poetry all in one afternoon. The festival is a big party for people who love books and storytelling.”

“I ended the day thinking: Maybe I’m not forgettable. Maybe I do belong. People are nice and maybe I’ll even leave here with new friends. Maybe my dream of writing a book shouldn’t be dead.”

“I’m back from the remarkably wonderful Festival of Faith and Writing at Calvin College where I spoke several times on the theme of (what else?) friendship.”

“Honesty about others’ flaws can, when done carefully, be a mitzvah, a service both to the reader and to the subject.”
