What's It Take to Be an ARG Fresh Meat?

At least once each year, the Atlanta Rollergirls offers tryouts for women interested in skating with the league. Those that pass this initial assessment are known as “fresh meat” and spend the next four to five months training in hopes of becoming full fledged Atlanta Rollergirls! Over thirty hopeful rollergirls attended our last assessment in August 2010, but only twenty moved forward to become fresh meat. This cohort of strong, diverse women will be taking their final assessments early next year in hopes of being drafted to a home team for the 2011 season, so look out for some fresh new faces this February when our upcoming season kicks off! This month, we sat down with some of our newest skaters to find out how they got involved with Atlanta Rollergirls, and what it’s like to be fresh meat.

Every rollergirl remembers how she first learned of the sport, and this class of fresh meat found their inspiration to play in a variety of places. Kendall, who works part-time at an IT support company and afternoons with an after-school program, learned about the resurgence of derby after watching, “Blood on the Flat Track,” a documentary about the creation of the Rat City Rollergirls. After watching the documentary, Kendall searched the internet for a local league, and found out that ARG would be holding its workshops later that month. After some encouragement from her husband, and gaining confidence at the workshops, she made it past the first hurdle: try-outs. Another of her fellow fresh meat, Lori, was inspired to try out after learning she had a rollegirl in her family! During a visit last winter, Lori learned that her husband’s aunt is also known as Vera Feisty, a skater for Assassination City Rollergirls in Dallas, TX. Her aunt’s enthusiasm was infectious, and inspired Lori to strap on some skates and try out as soon as she could.

Atlanta’s fresh meat training is intense, and meats usually attend at least three 2-hour practices a week in order to progress fast enough to be eligible for the next draft. Trainers work with them on form, endurance, and fundamentals to prepare them for scrimmaging with rollergirls, which they are usually cleared to do about two to three months after being accepted as fresh meat. In addition to the physical demands, being successful as fresh meat requires dedication and a positive attitude. Franny—who is working to open her own independent bakery, the Little Tart Bakeshop—notes that the hardest part about being fresh meat is remembering that improvement takes time: “I love this so much that I want to be awesome now…I'm always reminding myself that, like anything worth doing, derby takes a lot of work and dedication.”

With the 2011 season just around the corner, our fresh meat class is eager to join the ranks of the Atlanta Rollergirls, and enter the home team draft. With such a large group of ambitious, motivated skaters, you’re sure to see some new talent on your favorite home team this February.  Do you think you have what it takes?  The first recruitment workshop for our next round of Meat is on December 18th from 9-11am.  Hope to see you there!

Workout Like a Rollergirl Recap

Four hours of intense exercise sounds miserable, even to derby girls, yet a few dozen women still showed up to Workout Like A Rollergirl on Saturday, November 20th. There was a pinwheel of exercises ranging from soothing yoga, to titillating 80s aerobics, to a sock scrimmage. It could be argued some enjoyed this a bit too much, using the occasion to dust off their high-thighed leotards! As for the days following....well, some of us were glad we live in single story homes.

Staycation for Fido?
The only thing worse than spending the holidays with your in-laws is the guilt of kenneling poor Fido. But this season, don't let his sad eyes tear up yours. Spoiled Rotten Pet Sitters will not only check in on him, they'll feed him, walk him, and give him plenty of pets till your return.

With his custom care plan you can include groomer's visits, errands to the pet store, or even housesitting tasks like bringing in the mail. Just don't be surprised if you get a postcard from Fido that reads, "Don't worry about me. Feel free to say a few extra days."
