Why the "Scientific" in Skin Actives Scientific?

A friend asked us if Skin Actives had been recently bought by Garnier. No, we have not been bought by Garnier, although they borrowed part of our name (SkinActive) and their colors seem quite familiar. They have just launched a new skin care line called Garnier SkinActive. But look at the ingredients they use; there couldn't be bigger differences between the two brands.

What is missing from SkinActive by Garnier?
The science in the ingredients.

Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water All-in-1 Waterproof Makeup Remover & Cleanser
Ingredients: Water, hexylene glycol (solvent), glycerin, disodium cocoamphodiacetate (surfactant), disodium EDTA (preservative), poloxamer 184 (surfactant), polyaminopropyl biguanide (preservative).

Nothing beneficial for the skin, just a simple makeup remover.

Compare that with the ingredient list for our SAS Cleansing Oil:
Ingredients: Castor (Ricinus communis) Seed Oil, Squalane (Olive), Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) Seed Oil, PEG-16 Macadamia Glycerides, PEG-10 Sunflower Glycerides, Wheat Germ Oil, Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate, Pomegranate (Punica granatum) Seed Oil, Tocotrienols, Alpha-D-Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Astaxanthin, Lycopene, Lutein, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Beta Carotene.

This removes makeup, but has many nutrients to improve the health of the skin as well.

Garnier SkinActive Ultra-Lift Miracle Wake-Up Anti-Fatigue Day Cream
Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Dimethicone, Propanediol, Dimethicone/Peg-10/15 Crosspolymer, Polymethylsilsesquioxane Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Chloride, Propylene Glycol, Chlorphenesin (preservative),  Ascorbyl Glucoside, Tocopherol, P-Anisic Acid, Disodium Edta, Fragrance, Peg-10 Dimethicone, Sodium Hydroxide, Citric Acid, Dipropylene Glycol, Sorbitol, Blueberry Fruit Extract Sodium Citrate, Linalool, Hexyl Cinnamal, Benzyl Alcohol, Benzyl Salicylate, Citronellol, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Ci 42090/Blue 1.

This is a mixture of water with silicones and other solvents, full of fragrances but completely lacking in actives with any benefit to the skin. I can't see how this product would lift or wake-up your skin, but the blue from the colorant may look nice and the silicones will hide wrinkles and imperfections. No activity, though.

Look instead at what is in our SAS Antioxidant Day Cream. The power of antioxidants, amino acids and a good mix of oils and polysaccharides to enhance the function of the skin's immune system and provide a great alliance of ingredients to prevent water loss of the skin.

Thanks for the amazing shoutout @grutsb!!
Keeping that skin hydrated for summer is very important!

Probiotics and Prebiotics: The Newest Cosmetic “It-Words”

If you are bored of hearing the words “natural and organic” or "preservative-free”, here comes a brand new catch phrase courtesy of the marketing departments of skin care companies: Probiotic. This word is borrowed from medicine, in which live bacteria are used for the gastro-intestinal (GI) system to accelerate recovery from antibiotics and other general problems. The skincare industry has no problem using a word that doesn't apply in any way to skin care to sell you their old products as something brand new.

An Interesting Dilemma
Probiotics in medicine involve the delivery of live bacteria that may help change the bacterial flora of your GI system. However, bacteria are not allowed in skin care. They would lead to changes in the product that would vary depending on different environmental conditions. This is why we must use preservatives. The law demands testing for bacteria and allows for only a few innocuous (harmless) bacteria and NO disease-causing bacteria. How does the industry plan on getting away with selling bacteria filled skin care products? It doesn't. At most, the industry can add dead bacteria or extracts that are free from bacteria. But, with a bit of chutzpah, they call these
“probiotics" and "prebiotics", which does not apply in any way.

New Dream Cream Formula
Because the heat melts our Dream Cream during shipping, we have come up with a special summer formula! This lighter, non-whipped version won’t fall or melt but will still provide the moisture skin needs. We will start sending this new formula on June 1st.

Adjusted Vitamin A Cream Formula
We are always looking to improve our formulas. For this reason we have adjusted the amount of Allantoin in our Vitamin A Cream. With some clients, they felt a "stinging" sensation with our previous formula. By slightly adjusting the amount of Allantoin, we hope to decrease the possibility of this sensation. The change was made with sensitive skin in mind, something we are always conscious of here at Skin Actives. The efficacy of the formula is in no way affected by this change.

International Shipping Update!

We are very pleased to report that UPS Mail Innovations has delivered savings that we can now pass onto our international customers.

This new program uses UPS on the domestic part of the delivery, then turns the package over to USPS when it reaches the port to leave for its destination country. The savings they provide ensure we will not need to raise our international shipping prices this year, so they will remain at $10.00.
