Local News and Events


1.  Accepting RFPs for AmeriCorps Summer Members.  The Service Collaborative of WNY’s ABLE program has released its RFP for the 8 week summer positions. You can find it at the bottom of our web page-http://www.tscwny.org/programs/americorps-builds-lives-through-education/able  a network of affiliates and local partners to provide volunteers and resources to the community. Search our regional database of volunteer opportunities; they’re all here under one roof.
 
2. The annual Service-Learning Faculty Fellows training will take place on May 25 and 26th, 2016 from 8:30 - 5:00 pm at SUNY Buffalo State College. Dr. Edward Zlotkowski, an internationally renowned expert on incorporating service-learning experiences into the classroom will present.  Online registration form is due May 1, 2016. http://levesqueinstitute.niagara.edu/programs/wnyslc/2016-faculty-fellows/

Please encourage faculty at your institution to take advantage of this wonderful experience.

Are you looking to find solutions for a problem your organization is facing and craft an action plan? Service-Learning students from SUNY Buffalo State’s Creative Studies program are able to help! As part of their Creative Problem Solving Process & Facilitation course, students use their skills to assist organizations with new ideas for marketing their programs, new services to offer, ways to recruit volunteers, development of new programs for particular populations, personal professional development programs, and etc. This project is like a final exam for them.  Students are looking to assist your organization and guide you through the Creative Problem Solving Process on April 16 or April 23. If you are interested in participating or have questions, please contact Prof. Jo Yudess at YUDESSJA@BUFFALOSTATE.EDU or Aurora Schunk at SCHULAM@BUFFALOSTATE.EDU

  1. CIVIC ENGAGEMENT RETREAT is a collaboration between New York Campus Compact and Pennsylvania Campus Compact. Please consider joining everyone on Wednesday, June 1 (afternoon) through lunchtime on Friday, June 3, 2016. The Civic Engagement Retreat will be held at the beautiful Sky Lake Camp & Retreat Center in Windsor, NY.16-conference/

    $420 for non-member

Calls for Proposals and Presentations
 
  1. Submit a Proposal to Host a Roundtable or Symposium! NYCC will: provide up to $500 towards expenses for a roundtable; provide up to $1000 towards expenses for a symposium; handle registrations and collect registration fees; generate and provide name tags and registration lists. What is the difference between a roundtable and a symposium? The primary difference between a roundtable event and a symposium is the level of structure. Roundtables are less formal and provide a venue where every participant is expected to contribute to the discussion. Symposia involve one or more formal presentations (in the form of research papers, essay, or white papers) followed by active participation on the part of the audience. Symposia are often organized to explicitly include opposing perspectives. For more information visit: http://www.nycampuscompact.org/.

Grant Opportunities
 
  1. Save the Date! The State Farm Service-Learning grant period opens on February 29 and closes on Friday, April 29, 2016 at 11:59 pm eastern time.  The Youth Advisory Board is currently funding service-learning projects between $25,000 and $100,000 that address the root cause of the specific issue areas. Some areas include: Access to Higher Education/Closing the Achievement Gap; Economic Empowerment and Financial Literacy; Community Safety and Justice; and more.   1. Meals on Wheels of WNY is looking for students needing to fulfill service-learning hours in Erie County. Visit their website at https://mealsonwheelswny.org/volunteer to learn more and for registration purposes.  
  2. Do you wish you could volunteer but don’t have a car? Here is a great opportunity for you to help others while alleviating some of your own needs for transportation. In partnership with the Salvation Army Golden Age Center and Buffalo CarShare, Erie County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is seeking volunteers age 18 and older to help older adults attend the Salvation Army’s lunch program by providing a FREE ride to and from the site! The Salvation Army Golden Age Center is located at 980 Main Street, Buffalo. Buffalo CarShare will supply volunteers with a vehicle that may be picked up at 11 different convenient locations in the City of Buffalo.   We are seeking volunteers for Thursdays and Fridays for a full 4 hour shift or a split 2 hour shift in the morning or afternoon. Volunteers who sign up for a full 4 hour shift may use the vehicle for their own personal needs in between pick- ups! Volunteer drivers who serve at least 4 hours per month will receive a FREE Buffalo Roamer membership to Buffalo CarShare! That is a $20/month value! Founded in 2001, The Western New York Service-Learning Coalition (WNYSLC) is a growing collaboration of colleges, universities and community organizations.  The vision of the WNYSLC is to become the hub for service-learning in Western New York and to serve as a conduit for community organizations seeking service-learning students as well as for higher education institutions placing them.

Those interested in engaging college students in service are invited and encouraged to participate in the Coalition.
