Welcome from the Editor
This spring I am confronted with the impressive array of interests of students, faculty, and alumni of the higher education programs at NYU. Conference season, in particular, highlights these varied passions as friends and colleagues prepare to attend or present in their areas of interests: topics ranging from supporting bisexual students, navigating student activism, Greek life leadership, and incarcerated learners. This is the season where I am reminded that I came to NYU to be surrounded by and learn from these talented intellectuals and practitioners. Beyond Fisher: The Supreme Court and Future of Race in Higher Education
The early morning hour did nothing to dampen the excitement of attendees and panelists who gathered to examine research and law on race conscious policy and practice in higher education. The Steinhardt Institute of Higher Education Policy event attracted an audience of current students, faculty, and policy scholars from NYU and beyond concerned with issues of access and affirmative action. Doctoral student Maurice Shirley felt the event "highlighted the need to speak openly about race and how it remains a relevant factor in the overall experience and outcomes of underrepresented students. The presenters truly transformed a large lecture hall into a space of open dialogue," said Shirley. Chair Part-Time & Alumni Relations: Linda Nicholas
 Linda Nicholas joined the Higher Education and Student Affairs M.A. program this past fall as a part-time student. She has been working in financial aid at the New York office of Lebanese American University for more than five years. A master's degree seemed like her logical next step. She describes the program as "incredibly humbling," and cites both her classmates and the faculty, as incredible sources of knowledge. She joined the Executive Board of the Association of Student Affairs Professionals as the Part-Time & Alumni Relations Chair, a natural extension of her entrepreneurial spirit. "I now feel like a more knowledgable and thoughtful practitioner," she says. "Whether it is discussing an intentionally-designed study abroad program, being cognizant of social justice issues on the college campus, or submitting a budget proposal for a new position in my office, I am able to take what I am learning in my coursework and immediately put it into practice."

Spotted at ACPA: Alumni in Collaboration
 Dre Domingue, Ed.D and Dave Neely, both NYU M.A. alums of 2005 now working at U.Mass Amherst, took their combined social justice expertise to the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) conference in Montreal this month. The two have been frequent collaborators since partnering on a class project their first year in the higher education program. As a Learning Communities Specialist, Neely engages students in "extending their learning about social justice into personal and collective social action for change that reaches beyond the classroom through experiential pedagogies including intergroup dialogue, service-learning, and peer-theatre." He partnered with Domingue to present "Speak up! Step up! Facilitating Social Action Engagement with Students." Domingue serves as the chair for ACPA's Commission for Social Justice Educators, a group she considers her professional "home." She has been doing social justice work in higher education for 13 years, and Domingue finds the best way to continue learning is to be in dialogue with colleagues across the U.S.: "Presenting workshop sessions are conversation starters and places of idea exchange that I then can bring not only into the classes I teach but also the work I do as a leader of ACPA."

International Perspectives: India through Garvin Reid's Lens
Over spring break, International Perspectives in Higher Education traveled to India with Professors Ann Marcus and Teboho Moja. The whirlwind nature of the trip did not stop part-time Master's student Garvin Reid from capturing the details through his camera, and upon his return he was announced as the winner of the NYU Steinhardt Global Photo Contest. "The world grew a couple sizes over the past few days... I came to India with no expectations and was given more than I ever could have imagined," said Reid, an Assistant Director and Career Coach at the Wasserman Center for Career Development within the NYU School of Profession Studies. He has been an avid photographer since his undergraduate days at Cheyney University, an HBCU in Pennsylvania, and has been building a business around it more recently. He joined the higher ed program in 2013, and has been developing his dual interests in higher education and photography over the last several years. A self-motivated individual with strong writing skills is needed to keep this project growing in its second year. The newsletter's goal is engage and connect current and former students, faculty, staff, internship site supervisors, and other friends of the program. More details here.
