Internet Scams – Prostitution without the sex - A Case Study
Yet again we hear in the media that vulnerable individuals are being scammed out of their money by what was purported to be a new loved one.
Paragon were involved in such a case a while back. Our client had been duped out of a substantial sum by a new found internet love and after many hours of talking on the phone he had sent this seemingly perfect new partner money to pay for air tickets then hospital bills and so on.
We managed to track the flow of funds and were able to have an agent speak to the lady who he had fallen in love with. She was living in an apartment in Venice Beach, USA and was a prostitute. The difference here was that she did not have to perform sex with her clients, just talk to them on the phone and skype. Her job was to solicit the monies, take her cut and forward the cash to the next link in the chain, never to be seen again.
We were fortunate to recover some monies but from talking to the hooker there was no shortage of clients (Marks”).
The sad fact is that despite what might be hoped for, and what is being said, internet long distance relationships are most likely a scam and definitely as soon as there is a request for even $1, it’s time to end the contact. Our hooker told us that when a mark got the wind up and ended the contact, like a telemarketer, she just moved on to the next one.
