Business.gov.au has heaps of great information for food businesses including on licensing, registration and information for food importers. Go here for papers that we currently have out for consultation. Just enter 'FSANZ' into the search field to find them.


FSANZ coordinates and monitors food recalls in Australia. Recalls occur as a result of consultation between state and territory governments and a sponsor (usually the food product's manufacturer or importer).

FSANZ is hosting a symposium to mark our 25th anniversary. Come along and hear from highly regarded academics and professionals working at the forefront of public health protection, food safety regulation and risk analysis, as well as those developing an innovative food industry and advocating consumer choices.

They Symposium will be held on 17 and 18 August 2016 at the National Library of Australia, Parkes Place, Canberra.

To ensure that FSANZ is undertaking high-quality science, we implement a Science Strategy which outlines a strategic approach to ensuring our scientific capability. Our latest Science Strategy (2016-2019) has just been released. View the Science Strategy here. 

The 2016 application process to harmonise maximum residue limits with overseas limits closes soon. Requests can be submitted until 6pm (AEST) Friday 29 April. Find out more about how to submit a request. 

The Department of Agriculture and Water Resources is working with the Department of Health to provide greater assurance that imported food is safe. The work will look into the management of imported food to strengthen Austrlaia's ability to identify, respond to and manage food safety risks.

In 2012, FSANZ considered 241 European Union-authorised health claims for inclusion as food-health reationships in the Food Standards Code. In total, 183 food-health relationships from the EU were included in the Code. FSANZ has committed to consider a further 32 health claims. The closing date for the call for submissions on Proposal P1028 – Infant Formula has been extended to 6pm AEST, Tuesday 31 May 2016.



FSANZ has completed an administrative assessment and accepted the following applications. An opportunity to comment will be available at a later date. 
  • A1127 - Processing aids for wine: to seek permission for the use of four processing aids, silver chloride, ammonium bisulphite, chitin-glucan and PVI/PVP as processing aids for wine.
  • A1128 - Food derived from reduced acrylamide potential and brown potato line E12: to seek approval for food derived from a genetically modified potato line, E12 which has reduced acrylamide potential and reduced browning (black spot).

FSANZ has approved variations arising from the following application and proposals. FSANZ has notified these approvals to the Australia and New Zealand Ministerial Forum on Food Regulation: 
  • A1111 - Bacteriophage S16 and FO1a as a processing aid
  • P1031 - Allergen labelling exemptions
  • P1039 - Microbial criteria for infant formula
  • M1011 - Maximum Residue Limits (2015)
