The Impact of the New Legal Environment on the Church
It’s no secret that that our cultural landscape and legal environment has seen dramatic changes in just a few short years.
How do these changes impact the local church?
What do clergy and church leaders need to know to prepare and operate in this new environment?
Our guest speaker, H. Robert Showers, Jr., is Principal Partner of the law firm, Simms Showers, LLP -- a firm he cofounded in 2002 and a nationally known expert in nonprofit and church law having written and spoken extensively across the nation. His practice focuses on civil and commercial litigation and church, nonprofit and business law. He advises clients on corporate, risk management, tax-exempt, liability, land use, construction and employment issues primarily to nonprofits, churches and Christian businesses to avoid future problems.
Mr. Showers has served hundreds of churches and nonprofits including representation of denominations such as the Southern Baptists, Christian and Missionary Alliance, Assemblies of God, Presbyterian Church of America, Church of the Nazarene, Seventh Day Adventists.
Mr. Showers also serves as the current President and Chairman of the Christian Legal Society and planted three churches and started/run two nonprofits. Mr. Showers graduated cum laude from Wake Forest University and from the Wake Forest University School of Law, where he served with distinction on the Law Review and Moot Court Board. He has been married for over 30 years and has three wonderful daughters. He is a former federal prosecutor, served as Chief Assistant of US Attorney office and acted as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the US Justice Department.
