WaterFire and Providence Parks to Clean Up Waterplace Park and Valley and Olneyville neighborhoods!

PROVIDENCE, RI - Saturday, April 23rd – WaterFire Providence, is celebrating its 6th annual Earth Day cleanup in conjunction with Providence Parks. Over 70 volunteers will help clean and beautify Waterplace Park, Memorial Park, the surrounding rivers and sections of Valley Street and Olneyville.  Along with Providence Parks, WaterFire is excited to partner up with several different organizations to make our community cleaner.

Joining WaterFire is FreeGeek, a non-profit that collects and properly refurbishes e-waste that can then be donated to other organizations in need. FreeGeek will be collecting laptops, iPads, tablets, cell phones, computers, keyboards, mice, and cords of any kind. FreeGeek will be onsite in the Citizen’s Bank parking lot to collect e-waste.

The day’s efforts will be focused on three different areas.  An on-shore crew will concentrate on cleaning up Waterplace Park, a valued and treasured public space that is at the center of WaterFire events.  Volunteers will be covering the entire length of the park, from Waterplace Basin all the way down to South Water Street, picking up trash & clearing the walkways, parkland, and monuments of debris.  Other efforts will be focused on the rivers of downtown Providence.  WaterFire boats will be teaming up with volunteers to clear the river of debris that has been gathering since last Spring.  The other portion of the clean up will take place in the Valley and Olneyville neighborhoods, in partnership with TRAC builders. WaterFire Providence will be leading a crew from our soon to be headquarters, the WaterFire Arts Center, at 475 Valley Street up Regent Avenue to John J. O’Brien Memorial Park and then down to Donigian Park. All trash will be recycled or processed in an eco-friendly manner.

A special thank you to Narragansett Bay Commission and Providence Parks for their generous support and donations towards the clean-up efforts.  Thanks as well to SDS Disposal for generously providing a dumpster to properly contain and dispose of all trash at the end of the day.
