--> Volunteer Appreciation Week - April 10-16

Thank you to all of ASN's volunteers who inspire the next generation about science. Our signature Provincial program is Scientists & Engineers-in-the-Classroom (SEitC) which is entirely delivered by volunteer scientists, engineers and subject matter experts. Last year they gave 1,101 presentations to 30,475 Alberta students and their teachers all at no cost to schools. Go to www.albertasciencenetwork.ca to read some inspiring profiles of our talented volunteers. More will be added regularly.

Teacher Workshops is science curriculum-linked PD for teachers. We have offered this popular program in Calgary since 1996 and now in Edmonton. Enthusiastic teachers learn from experts how they can get students excited about science.

Chemistry All Around You is a gymnasium style SEitC program for up to 300 students at a time. It annually reaches over 10,000 students with high energy chemical reactions and exciting examples of the chemistry that is all around us. As our CAAY volunteer always says – “there is no such thing as magic, only science that we do not yet understand”.

Walk Through the Forest and Arbor Days are offered each May in Grande Prairie. About 1,000 Grade 6 students enjoy a full day of forestry education at a local recreation area over the three days of Walk Through the Forest. On the Thursday following WTTF over 100 volunteers deliver tree saplings to 1,700 grade 1 students as part of a SEitC style classroom Arbor Day celebration.

For a full overview of last year’s programs download our 2015 Report to the Community. Look for our 2016 Report to the Community in July.

And thank you again to all of the enthusiastic volunteers who make science fun and relevant for Alberta students!

--> Salute to APEGA

While our volunteers come from a wide variety of careers and are members of many professional associations, we would like to recognize the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) whose members comprise over 30% of our SEitC volunteer base.
We are now advertising for volunteers among APEGA’s membership on a regional basis through Branch-specific newsletters. While we continue to look for volunteers to serve our main urban areas, beginning September 2016 we will be reaching out to potential volunteers in more rural areas who are interested in providing classroom presentations in their communities. Those volunteers will be fully supported by ASN staff in our closest urban centres.
We continue to have high demand from schools for presenters in the “traditional” engineering disciplines such as Civil / Structural, Mechanical, Chemical and Electrical engineering.

Can you help? We are always looking for enthusiastic classroom presenters. Read more about what's involved in volunteering with us.
--> Thank you Elspeth!

In 1996 Elspeth Snow was hired as a part-time contractor to introduce a new program for teachers in Calgary. At the time we had been delivering what is now called Scientists & Engineers-in-the-Classroom to Calgary classrooms for about five years. We thought that in addition to sending volunteers to classrooms to impact students, we could also help teachers learn science by hosting PD workshops at our venue. Elspeth planned each workshop and made sure that the co-presenters - a scientist and an experienced teacher -provided accurate science and practical classroom-ready activities. The program was an immediate success and led to a Science Symposium over three evenings every October, plus standalone workshops on a huge variety of science curriculum topics throughout the school year.
Twenty years and 500+ workshops to 10,000+ teachers later, Elspeth will be retiring at the end of this program year. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Elspeth for her dedication and years of service to Alberta Science Network, and to wish her well in her retirement.
