RGHS Weekly Bulletin 22 April 2016

The Champions Cup (the Rustenburg Under 16 Hockey and Netball tournament) that took place over the past weekend is yet another good example of successful teamwork at Rustenburg.  Spearheaded by two of our parents, Lauren Wheeler and Robyn Morgan, it draws in many other parents, staff and girls who put in an immense amount of time and effort to host this event.  It was clear that this well-received and thoroughly enjoyable tournament  is fast becoming popular with visiting schools.  Thank you so much to everyone involved in its success, be it behind the scenes, as a participant or as a supporter.

In addition to sport, there is so much on the go and I am constantly reminded of how fortunate we are to be able to give our girls a wide range of experiences and opportunities to develop additional skills, outside the classroom.  There are so many cultural, community outreach and co-curricular activities on offer and I encourage our girls to get involved and have fun doing so.  These are the things that they will remember about their high school years, long after matriculating.

Assemblies will soon be different, as The 22 Habits of Unhappy People (www.infobarrel.com) draws to an end. The past two assemblies have focussed on these habits:
  • Self-labelling: Moving on from mistakes is important. If we admonish ourselves when we mess up, it affects our self-image negatively, so we need to reprogram how we “talk to ourselves”.
  • Letting strangers affect our mood: Quite simply, don’t let someone else’s bad day control the outcome of yours. Being especially nice to grumpy people is quite a good tactic!
Warm regards
Susan Schnetler - Acting Principal

Pesach Greetings

Blessings and good wishes to our Jewish families and staff at Passover!

More good news for the Mathematics department:

Jamie Fraser, Grade 9, has been selected to be part of the Grade 10 team to represent South Africa at the International Mathematics Competition in Thailand in August this year. The teams began their preparation this past week and  she will be attending weekly training at Elkanah House.

We wish  Hannah Clayton (Grade 12), who has been selected to represent South Africa at the Pan African Mathematics Olympiad, all the best as she competes in Senegal next week.
Thanks to Ms Schnetler and Mr Siebrits for organising the installation of a giant Chess Board next to the tennis courts. The search for the next grand master has begun!

Guest speaker, José Diaz, will give an illustrated talk on the quirky French composer, Erik Satie, whose 150th anniversary of his birth is being celebrated throughout the world this year.

Besides the various CD prizes, this will be the first time that the Judith Dernier Piano Prize of R1 000 is offered.  The Prize was established through donations on the occasion of Judith Dernier’s retirement from full-time teaching at Rustenburg in 2015.  REBECCA TERRY and JIYOON JEON are the RGHS participants.  Please come and support this exciting event.  Tickets (at the door):  R60 adults & R20 scholars/students/pensioners.

Written by Justine Crook-Mansour (Grade 10)

Going off to Franschhoek for a leadership camp on the first weekend of the March holidays might not have appealed to most people, including me. But what I thought sounded like a lot of hard work turned out to be the best camp I’ve ever been on.
