Goodbye Hazel
Over 70 people attended Hazel’s leaving do last Sunday. On behalf of the Ward Roger thanked Hazel for all her hard work and presented her with a montage depicting her time as a Cheylesmore Ward Councillor & as Lord Mayor. Cheylesmore Community Centre and residents also gave her presents & cards.

Message from Hazel:
''I would like to thank all Cheylesmore, Whitley and Stonehouse Estate residents who came to the Festival last Sunday to say goodbye. The many cards & mementoes I received will keep strong the many happy memories I have of my 16 years as a councillor. I wish all residents well for the future, I know Roger and Mark (if elected), will continue the work in our area always putting residents' views first''.

Will the Weekly Residents' Update Continue?
A resident has sent us this
I believe that Hazel & Kevin started this email update so will it continue after Hazel goes?

We are the only team in Coventry who keep their residents updated on a weekly basis of the activities of 2 of their Councillors & campaigner. We've always believed that it's important that you know what your elected members are doing for you and how they are dealing with the many issues raised by residents in the ward. We also see it as a vehicle for sharing community news.

The production of the Residents’ Update is quite an undertaking, and we know it is well received by our readers. The compilation of information has been a team effort from Hazel, Roger, Mark and the editor. Although we have tried to keep the update non-political, it is a fact of life that it is uniquely produced by Conservative councillors for the benefit of their community.

Manor Park Primary School Issues
On Monday 18th April Roger attended a meeting at Manor Park Primary School with parties interested in the issues caused by how parents parked when dropping off and picking up children. Points discussed:
  • Many parents drive their children to school rather than walking.
  • The road does not have the capacity to handle such a volume of vehicles.
  • Parents park on yellow lines and sometimes even on the zig zags.
  • The school pays for 2 crossing wardens, something many schools have decided not to do.
  • Both the Police and the Coventry City Council enforcement officers have been patrolling outside the school.
  • The Camera car is currently patrolling twice a week. This can be increased if deemed necessary.
  • Discussed the possibility of having a zebra crossing outside the school.
  • Issue raised regarding where the ice van parks.

Junction of Queen Isabels Avenue/ Daventry Road
Hazel has been informed that the junction of Queen Isabels Avenue and Daventry Road is going to be treated by the Plane & Patch gang. Currently they do not have a start date as there are quite a lot of sites around the City that also have to be treated. However it will be actioned in this financial year.

Daventry Road is monitored for issues and this section is walked monthly so they will be keeping their eye on the situation. Should any priority 1 potholes appear then they will be treated.

Upcoming Road Works in our Area
  • Mary Herbert Street (outside no 29) – 16th – 19th May - 2  way lights with cones and signs. Reason Longitudinal Communal pipe renewal by Severn Trent
  • Mile Lane (from junction with Thomas Landsdail towards city centre) - 24th April 7am – 11am – Road Closure. Reason - Replace manhole cover and frame
  • Whitley Flyover (Leaf Lane area) – 28th – 29th April – Cones & signs. Reason - Streetlighting Replacements
Whitley South Planning Meeting
The planning meeting to discuss the JLR Planning Application for Whitley South will take place on Tuesday 26th April at 2pm in Diamond Rooms 1 and 2 in the Council House. Here is the agenda.

A45/A46 West Bridge Update
From Alan Jones, Galliford Try. The yellow arrow on the map shows the location of West Bridge.

We recently opened the west bridge over the A45 and are currently progressing work necessary to open the east bridge over the A46 by the end of June. Pedestrian and cycleway diversions have been clearly identified.

The additional line of back piles to the east bridge abutments is completed, and we will shortly be fixing steel reinforcement, shutters and pouring concrete into the pile capping beam which will be tied into the bridge structure. The bridge will then have waterproofing works carried out, along with kerb laying, road surfacing and finally white lining. We are currently excavating underneath the original roundabout to complete the underpass. The underpass is scheduled to be open by December this year.

Members of the site team were recently presented with a Gold Awards from the Considerate Constructors Scheme at a ceremony in Manchester. The award reflects the outstanding contribution made by the team for community engagement, attending educational events to encourage people into construction, and achieving extremely high standards of safety and welfare.

Residents Parking Scheme on Benedictine Road?
Residents have been asking for an update on the petitions asking to join the Cheylesmore Residents’ Parking Scheme

Tollbar Island Update
Last week Roger attended a presentation for councillors in regards to Tollbar Island.

The east bridge (indicated by orange arrow) should be in use by the end of June.

The A45 east bound is due to be closed over one weekend soon, as there is a need to lower the road by about 2.5 feet.

This will require 125 lorry loads to take away the unwanted material and 80 lorry loads of material to reconstruct the road.

It is still planned to open the whole junction by end of December, with only some minor work left to be done afterwards.

Was your car damaged on 14th April?
On the evening of 14th April, a resident witnessed someone reversing into a car parked in Asda Car Park, Daventry Road. The damaged vehicle had a registration ending MTX.

Roadside Bins are Being Emptied
With the volume of parked vehicles these days, the council vehicles do not always have easy access to the roadside bins. It may appear that small bins attached to lampposts are not being emptied. This week, during an early morning visit to the area around Fenside, Mark recorded the presence of a refuse vehicle.

Earlsdon Festival on Monday 2nd May
The Earlsdon Festival is always a very popular event in the community and it is organised by a small but talented team of volunteers, backed by local sponsors who make it financially viable. Each year, to man the road closures safely, the Festival requires volunteers - and lots of them!

The Festival requires more volunteers for a 1 or 2 hour commitment during the day - without a full slate of manned road closures it is very difficult to put the event on.

If you are able to help, know anyone who can, or can forward this email to your own networks, it would be hugely appreciated.

For those interested, please email ar.andrews@gmail.com as soon as possible.

A-Z of Rubbish and Recycling
Did you know that disposable nappies make up 4% of the Country’s household waste – that’s 14,000 tonnes per year! They can take up to 500 years to decompose, more if disposed of in a plastic bag.
