 President’s Message

Dear Members and Friends,

It is always amazes me how fast time goes by.  It seems like an almost impossible task to complete my ‘bucket list’. The good thing is, Charley and I have had many wonderful years together and have been fortunate enough to be able to check off many things from our lists.  But of course, we have a habit of adding to it now and then.

As I get close to the end off my time as president of the Board of Trustees of Community Unitarian Universalist Church, I become more and more concerned about a very special item on our ‘bucket lists’ ….. a home for CUUC to call its own.  A place to become a real church where we can comfortably gather and grow and socialize, and invite the outside community in to get to know what we are all about, and where we can become a positive force in the community.  We do not wish to remain the best kept secret inNew Symrna Beach.

I have faith in those who will follow.  I believe in their time this dream will become a reality.  It will take committed people, hard work and fund raising.  We all want CUUC to have a sustainable future. Let’s make it so….the community needs us.

A reminder:  At the end of May of 2015, we had a Congregation Conversation.  The question asked was: ”What would you like to have happening in our church one year from now and what will YOU be doing to make it happen?”

The over whelming response was "we needed a home of our own".

It did not happen exactly as we had hoped but we have learned a lot which has better prepared us to proceed.

Just remember, it takes each and everyone one of us doing our share, to the very best of our ability, giving of our time as well as our money.

Let’s remember it takes money to pay the excellent speakers we are so fortunate to bring to you on a Sunday morning.  In order to prepare a proposed budget for the Annual Meeting, we have the need to know what you plan to contribute to the budget in order for us to know what kind of programming we can provide for the coming year.  Get that information to our Treasurer Bud Cullison asap.  Thank You!

To the many who have been gracious and understanding of this necessary process of making a pledge of money to CUUC for the next fiscal year, we say Thank You.  Thank You for understanding just how necessary the process is. Without it, planning is impossible.

As always, I look forward to seeing you in church.
With Love, Audrey Barcelo, President
CUUC/BOT

Reflections

I was in the Dunkin Donuts drive-thru line the other day, and when I got to the window the attendant said,   “No charge, the person in the car before you paid for your coffee”.  Needless to say I was surprised, but more, my first reaction was confusion and a little paranoia.  Like why would that guy pay for my coffee?   The attendant must have read my face, she said, “Don’t worry, that happens a lot.  People are just paying it forward.”

It made me think, wow, there is goodness in the world; and goodness for goodness sake.  People do little acts of kindness with no thought of repayment.  Imagine if that behavior model was political campaign rhetoric!

Random acts of kindness strike me as the true sense of the word “Christian”.  It reflects the basis of the teachings that have come to us in the form of the New Testament.  Whether we consider ourselves believers or not, the guiding principles of a Christian faith center around random acts of kindness.  Much ado is made about a poor man (Jesus) who goes out of his way to help his fellow man or woman.  If you leave out the part about the starting a religion, if you leave out the part about talk of redemption; you’re left with a pure and simple life model.  If Jesus really lived, I don’t believe he was thinking about starting a multi-billion dollar organization.  I don’t believe he got all caught up in his own righteousness.  If he did live, I believe he was just paying it forward.   I believe his mother taught him to be kind to folks, no matter what their beliefs or occupation.  I believe his dad taught him to share what he had like fishes and loaves, no matter how many were hungry.  You often hear people say, “if Jesus walked among us today, he’d be appalled at what some do in his name”.  Would Jesus not help refugees?  Would he not protect immigrants from starvation or ill health?  I’d like to think so.

So what I do believe, is that there is a “Christian” spirit in most of us.  I believe that our world is full of people who do random acts of kindness, but it doesn’t always get on the news.  It’s not a new idea, but it would be so much better if those acts made headlines instead of the negative, violent ideas and acts.

Wouldn’t this be awesome:

Extra!   Extra!

Stranger buys lady cup of coffee…for no reason what so ever.   It was a random act of kindness.
