Newsletter #1: Building the foundation

Hello! We are excited to send you the inaugural issue of the Boston open data newsletter. This issue will recap our efforts to build a lasting foundation for open data within the city. Subsequent issues will be produced and distributed each month to keep you updated on our progress.

Data Coordinator Summit
The Boston open data team hosted the city's first Data Coordinator Summit on March 30, 2016. Nearly 70 representatives (including data coordinators from almost every city department) converged upon the Boston Public Library for a half day of learning. Through a fun-filled program, summit attendees were introduced to the open data to open knowledge project and informed of our shared next steps.

Data Coordinator engagements
Since mid-April, the Boston open data team met and engaged with 14 different departments. From these conversations we began the cataloging process for 11 datasets that currently reside on the open data portal. We also discovered approximately 45 new datasets that are potential candidates for the next iteration of the open data portal. (Note- These figures are subject to change as we engage, learn, and iterate over time.)

We look forward to meeting with 23 additional data coordinators during the month of May and scheduling follow-up discussions for the month of June.

Are you a data coordinator that still needs to schedule your initial engagement?
No problem.  Please log your preferred time/date in May via this poll and fill out this short survey to help us understand the use of data within your department.

Thank you for helping us broaden access to the city's data for all users,

The Boston open data team

A total of 50 individuals currently serve as data coordinators for their respective departments.
(Note- Five departments designated more than one data coordinator.)
We began the process of collecting descriptive information for 11 datasets that currently reside on the open data portal.

We discovered ~45 potentially new and open datasets that align with public interests and department priorities.
