PT Tip of the Month

Pain in the Butt - Part II

Lateral hip rotator dysfunction can be a big pain in the butt, and there are several very effective ways to approach this pain and get rid of it completely, in as little as one visit. But that depends on what is causing those rotators to be dysfunctional.

For example: A while back I did a clinical pearl for releasing the piriformis using strain counterstrain. It’s a very effective technique but, if the pelvis or sacrum are not level and symmetrical, the piriformis tender point / pain will likely return quickly and you have essentially prolonged the pain and wasted a visit.

So this month, I present a video that is to be used to facilitate the medial and lateral rotators of the hip AFTER you have used Muscle Energy Technique to correct the dysfunction in them.  Those techniques for clearing the rotational restrictors of the hip are taught in my M1 course and can also be found on the M1 DVD.

When you add this video technique to proper treatment of the restrictors of the hip using Muscle Energy Technique, your chances of a one-hit-wonder increase dramatically. Give it a try…..

Questions from the Mail Room

Mail-Room
Q:  Tom,  thank you for making this technique so accessible to all of us. Already tried it on a few people and noticed a difference. If the sacrum faces right, does it also sidebend right or is it the opposite side that it bends?
Bogie, LMT

A: As it states in my MET teaching manuals and DVD, a torsion is defined as side bending and rotation to the same side. Glad you are having such success with the techniques !

Our Seminars

Thomas K. Ockler, PT
Muscle Energy Technique is one of the most effective and valuable manual techniques for the identification and correction of somatic asymmetry and hypomobility. These techniques can be used immediately to find and correct the causes of all types of pain. These are not cover up procedures, but rather techniques that cure the problem with dramatic results.

Unlike manipulative techniques, MET works via evidenced-based neuro-physiology using the muscle spindles to release tight muscles and decrease tone and excitability, thus restoring the bones and joints to normal mobility and returning them to symmetrical, smooth function.

The two-day courses involve a mix of theory, demonstration and hands-on practice. Actual evaluation and treatments will be performed by each participant using the methods learned. Plenty of time is allotted for hands on practice as well as questions and discussion.

Due to the hands-on nature of these courses, class size is limited to assure a very high quality educational experience. Attend one of our seminars and don't miss this magnificent educational opportunity!

FAQ's Regarding the Courses

Host an MET Course

Hosting an MET course of your very own can be a big advantage in several ways and it’s easier than you think. With continuing education requirements now for most states, the cost of sending a single participant to a course can cost upwards of $1,200.00 for a weekend class. That can eat up your CEU money in no time flat.
