China Stresses IP Protection. Early Registration Remains Key.
This week is China National IP week Conference. The event is hosted by the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO), and various other authorities. Shen Changyu, SIPO Commissioner delivered a speech.
The commissioner’s speech emphasized China’s efforts at increasing Intellectual Property protection and to raise China’s profile as a center of Intellectual Property protection and enforcement. This fits with the broader official push toward encouraging domestic innovation in China.
The event also featured a speech from WIPO Director General Francis Gurry. Gurry placed China’s IP protection efforts in the context of global IP protection facilitated by WIPO.
The conference comes as Chinese companies are among the top applicants for new patents around the world. May commentators hope that with increased numbers of domestic Chinese patents Chinese authorities will begin to be more reliable in enforcing patent protection laws against Chinese infringers of patents held by foreign companies.
So far, we have yet to see a major shift in enforcement. Foreign Companies are advised to register their patents in China as early as possible. Registration with the help of a qualified China Patent Attorney is essential before entering into any talks for cooperation with a local Chinese partner.
