Australia to Ease Visa Rules for Chinese Tourists
Australia, once a beneficiary of China’s hunger for natural resources is seeking a change in its relationship with China. The country will revise its visa rules for incoming Chinese in the areas of education and tourism. Chinese added about 7.7 billion Australian dollars to the economy in 2015, and Australian authorities are seeking ways to keep that number climbing higher.
The new measures were announced during a visit of Australia’s Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to China. These will include accepting visa applications in Chinese, and accepting online applications from China. Visa’s valid for 10 years will also be added.
In addition to diversifying sources of incoming cash the move is intended to strengthen the relationship between Australia and China. The move is expected to capitalize on emerging trends in Chinese tourism which favor individual or private trips rather than the traditional guided group tours of years past.
Tourism is one of Australia’s fastest growing sectors, driven largely by increasing numbers of Chinese tourists.
