Samuel P. Langley Distinguished Professor James E. Hubbard, Jr. has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). Hubbard was recognized as the key pioneer in developing piezo-film sensors and piezo-electric actuation systems for smart structures and materials applications, as well as his extensive contribution to aerospace engineering in the field of smart structures. Three students, Sylvie DeLaHunt, Elaine Petro and Lauren Trollinger, have been named "Tomorrow's Engineering Leaders: The 20 Twenties" by Penton's Aviation Week Network.

"These three graduate students have all demonstrated that they are outstanding scholars, as well as leaders in the Department of Aerospace Engineering," said Norman Wereley, Department Chair and Minta Martin Professor of Aerospace Engineering. "These women are outstanding examples of how well graduate students can flourish in our graduate program!" Read More.


President Barack Obama has named Anya Jones, a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers. Read More.

Alumnus Heads Up DARPA X-Plane Project,
Quoted by CNN

Dr. Ashish Bagai (B.S. '90, M.S. '92, Ph.D. '95) is the program manager of DARPA's Tactical Technology Office, and heads up the agency's Vertical Takeoff and Landing Experimental Plane (VTOL X-Plane) project. He was recently quoted by CNN on the project in conjunction with Aurora Flight Sciences Corporation's 'Lighting Strike' VTOL X-plane design.
