FlashLite enables UQ chemists' work with NASA
Data-intensive high performance computer FlashLite is enabling UQ researchers to work with NASA researchers and simulate new chemical materials for use in long manned space missions.
Prof. Debra J. Bernhardt and Dr Christoph Rohmann (both pictured) of UQ’s Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology are investigating composite materials using boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) for aerospace applications.

These new materials are expected to provide extreme strength and radiation shielding essential for lengthy space travel.
They have already published one paper on their initial results in The Journal of Physical Chemistry C, and another paper co-authored with NASA researchers is in progress.
The UQ-side of the research is heavily reliant on FlashLite’s abilities to model large-scale systems, which are very memory-intensive. Read more

RCC calls for Tinaroo early adopters and trainees
RCC is calling for early adopters of the new high performance computer Tinaroo to step up and apply for their accounts. Tinaroo’s position within RCC’s advanced computing strategy is outlined on the RCC website.
Tinaroo is exclusively for UQ researchers and replaces Barrine, which was decommissioned earlier this year.
RCC has recently published information about Tinaroo on its website, including technical specifications, how potential users can acquire an account, and upcoming training sessions. Read more

HPC remote rendering coming soon to UQ
RCC is currently deploying remote rendering on some of its HPC resources to allow researchers to visualise and interact with large, complex data sets and models with much higher performance than what is presently available.
RCC is working on infrastructure that will integrate Graphics Processing Unit-intensive applications into UQ’s cluster computing environments.
Remote rendering will allow data to be visualised ‘in situ’, meaning data does not need to be moved from the HPC onto local workstations for analysis.
Early adopters are welcome to try RCC’s proposed remote rendering capabilities. Please contact Oliver Cairncross to register your interest: o.cairncross@uq.edu.au. Read more

June's Tech Talk to discuss minting DOIs for data
Following the success of the inaugural Monthly Tech Talk on 6 May, the 10 June session will focus on minting Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) for data.
Presenters will discuss how institutions mint DOIs, and how to leverage Nectar virtual laboratories to mint DOIs. Gerry Ryder (pictured) of the Australian National Data Service will talk about ANDS' perspective on DOIs.
The Monthly Tech Talk is an initiative of ANDS, Nectar, QCIF, Intersect, VicNode, eRSA and Pawsey. Attendees meet simultaneously in capital city hubs and connect nationwide via videoconferencing networks.
The event is for anyone who wants to know more about NCRIS facilities and the technical aspects of research data. More info
