Art Equinox--a Great Success! Two days of all Art!  The kids were inspired, engaged, and joyful. Thanks so much to our incredible Arts Equinox team, headed up by Phoebe Liang, including Katie Ryan, Cora Waring, Kazuyo Matsuda, Eugeniya Melnik, Mandy Goldman, Melissa Gallin, Shannon Hedrick, Amy Lipton, and Victor Kusmin. 
Much appreciation is owed to  Corinna Pringle and Rich Day for heading up the Green Room with great food. 
Thanks also to our parents volunteers, the teachers and staff, and the artists all of whom made the two days a great experience for our kids.  

Driscoll Spirit Rocks!  We met our teacher/staff raffle incentive - the whole school will celebrate with Crazy Hair Day (date to be announced).

TISSUES & DISINFECTANT WIPES NEEDED: Many classrooms are out of tissues and disinfectant wipes. Please check in with your teacher and bring in a couple of boxes or containers! 
 
Community News 

The Brookline School Committee, through its Subcommittee on Policy Review, regularly reviews and, when necessary, revises or creates written policies governing the Public Schools of Brookline.  In an effort to improve public feedback on policy revisions, the proposed draft of any policy under review is posted on the Public Schools website when it is approved for a First Reading by the full School Committee.
The Brookline School Committee currently has two policies under review and welcomes your feedback: 
1) Physical Restraint Policy
2) Earned Sick Time Policy for Less than Half-time, Temporary, and Certified Seasonal Workers.

Come to the IntelliJam, a family-friendly literacy event at the Brookline Teen Center, Sunday, May 1st, from 1-4 pm! This event will be hosted by one of Brookline High's social justice clubs, the Brookline Literacy Partnership, which helps provide tutoring and support to underfunded schools in the Greater Boston Area! Entrance is $10 per family and $5 per person. COMMUNITY CLIMATE CHANGE DISCUSSION- ​Do you want to celebrate Earth Day by working  to Live Small​ (as in small carbon footprint)? Benefit Dance to End Gun Violence, co-hosted by Brookline residents Lynne Layton, Jody Leader, and Susan Phillips. Proceeds will go to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence (recently merged with Gabrielle Giffords' Americans for Responsible Solutions). The gala will feature hors d'oeuvres, drink, and the all too rare reunion of the fabulous 7 piece rock band, Girls Night Out. We promise a rocking good time for an urgent and crucial cause. That a third of 7th-8th graders use technology for recreational purposes more than three hours a  day? These are just some of the findings of Brookline’s latest Student Health Survey, which reveals  behavior and attitudes on issues ranging from substance use to relationships and sexual activity to mental health. This B-PEN event highlights some of the survey’s key findings, current initiatives to address issues, and includes a Q&A with AWARE and Prevention/Intervention representatives, B-PEN’s Family Resource Advocate, and Brookline High School Peer Leaders. ATTENTION TUTORING: is a non pharmacological approach for students with ADHD/ADD, attention and executive function difficulties. This program trains the brain -1- through neurofeedback computerized attention training, -2- executive function/organization skills training, and -3- relaxation breathing. It was developed by Dr. Naomi Steiner, who is a developmental behavioral pediatrician, clinician and researcher, expert in ADHD and attention difficulties. Her research focuses on computer attention training, including neurofeedback. Lessons are delivered at home by Attention Tutoring certified tutors. We know you will have a great vacation enjoying time with your children. A couple of updates for you this week!

 

Thank you to Arts Equinox Committee– We had an amazing two days of Arts Equinox and we are so appreciative of the committee’s work to keep this amazing tradition going for Driscoll Students.  Special thanks to Phoebe Hyde, Chair, Kazuyo Matsuda, Scheduler Extraordinaire, Katie Ryan, Artist Recruitment, Eugeniya Melnik and Cora Waring, All School Project, Corinna Pringle, Chair of the Green Room, and Rich Day Co-Chair of the Green Room.  The PTO Board support was most evident throughout the planning process.  Please visit the Driscoll PTO website to see the creative work of the Driscoll children.

 

Teacher Raffle – Thank you to all who contributed to the teacher raffle.  The teachers appreciate the incredible parent support and grateful for your contributions to the raffle.

 

Placement Reminder- We appreciate the time and effort you spend completing the placement form and thank you for supporting the placement process.  This form must be turned into the office or to your child’s teacher by Wednesday, April 27, 2016.  Parents may also attach a digital copy of this form to an email sent to eileen_woods@brookline.k12.ma.us.  Families may turn in two separate forms for each custodial parent.   The placement form was sent by Blackboard connect e-mail.  Please let us know if you did not receive the e-mail and we will make sure you get a copy. 

 

Survey for Parents

 

  • Each parent/guardian who the district has an email address for will receive an email from Panorama. When you click on the link in the email you will go to a webpage that has links to the school survey that for their child's school. For example, if they have a child at Pierce and BHS, they will see two links. 
  • Paper Copies – The district administrator, Cori Stott will email you the. pdfs of the surveys if you do not have online access. Paper copies should be returned the office.  Please let us know if you need a paper copy.
  • Translations -- we have translated the surveys into all the languages we translate into and these will also be available online. Families who require translation will also get the emails linking to the survey in their language. The survey will be open until April 27th.
