Stormwater: From the Ground Up

The LWV of Wheaton welcomes the public to a free program titled “Stormwater: From the Ground Up” on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at the Wheaton Park District Community Center, 1777 S. Blanchard, Wheaton.  Our speaker will be Krista Grimm, an urban planner, current vice president of the LWV Lake Michigan Region, and Water Issues Specialist for LWV of Illinois. Her presentation, funded by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, will focus on 1) why flooding is happening more frequently, 2) negative impacts on the environment from greater stormwater, and 3) green infrastructure solutions, primarily aimed at homeowners, but relevant to municipalities, too.

More about Solid Waste in our communities
Thank you to all the Wheaton residents who took time to complete the city's Waste Collection Survey.  You can find the results on the City of Wheaton website.  These results were discussed at a City Planning Session on April 11.  This discussion can be viewed on the City website as well.  Should you have any additional comments or input you would like to relay to the City on waste collection, you should direct it as early in the process as possible to Assistant City Manager Michael Dzugan or to any of the City Council members

For all our communities, Solid Waste Task Force Chair Barbara Wonser has prepared a chart comparing several local municipalities.  The information contained was primarily drawn from their websites.

Drawing from our League Survey
From time-to-time we will bring you information from our League Survey.  This month we will talk about "Reasons for joining the LWV-Wheaton."  People join the LWV for many reasons; LWV/W members joined to increase political awareness (57%), to learn more about my local elected officials (46%), to learn more about community issues (41%) and for an opportunity to study issues in depth (36%). Less popular reasons for joining included: social interaction, friends are members, to register voters, and to support a women’s organization (each selection receiving an approximate 21%). Some members joined as political candidates (11%), for book club discussions (2%) or don’t recall why they joined (5%)

"Reasons for remaining in the LWV-Wheaton" closely mirror membership reasons for joining the LWV/W:  To learn more about my local elected officials (53%), for political awareness (64%)to learn more about community issues (52%) and to study issues in depth (36%).  Interest is registering voters increased as members remained in the LWV/W (34%). Along with book club discussion (23%) and being friends with members (32%) and social interaction 41%).

Based on reasons for joining, respondents indicated that the LWV/W is very relevant (47%) or somewhat relevant (36%).  Only 6% of members indicated that the LWV/W is not relevant to the reasons they joined.
