A DDCVS Training Event on Good Governance: Recruiting, Retaining and Getting the Best from your Trustees.

At this half-day session, we’ll look at the 12 essential responsibilities of trustees and discuss what motivates people to undertake the role and what they gain from it.

We’ll cover what you need to think about before you recruit trustees and what is good practice when you are recruiting new trustees. In addition, we’ll look at how to get the best out of trustees and how to review your trustee board’s performance.

This event will be led by Bev Shepard who has a wealth of board-level experience acquired over twelve years in the charity and public sector. Bev is currently a Trustee of DDCVS and Trustee and Company Director of Level, a charity that promotes and develops the creativity of people with a learning disability based in Rowsley.

The event is free to attend, please book your place with Sarah Paisley at DDCVS.

Derbyshire Mind now offers Mental Health First Aid Training courses.  These courses are great for continuing professional development, awareness for managers and useful for anyone working with the public. This year Derbyshire Mind has introduced two new courses to the annual programme; a one day MHFA for schools and a two-day standard Armed Forces course to support participants who work with current or former services personnel.

Coming up in Bakewell on the 23rd of May is the MHFA Lite which is a 3-hour introductory mental health awareness course. The course is delivered by approved MHFA instructors who have completed a seven-day programme accredited by the Royal Society for Public Health. All participants receive a certificate of attendance and a manual. The course costs £75 per person.

From 6th April all companies, including charitable companies and community interest companies, must have a register of people with significant control (PSC register) of individuals and legal entities which have “significant influence or control” over them. There must be a register even if there are no PSCs, or even if the company is dormant. See: –

If you have not yet set up a PSC register or if have set up something without ensuring it complies with the requirements, your company should be compliant if:

(1)   You read Sandy Adirondack’s full article above, or at least the Companies House summary guidance at http://tinyurl.com/jb8f8pv and any sections of the full guidance to which it directs you.

(2)   You then produce a document (a single sheet will do) headed “Register of people with significant control” with your company name and number, and whichever of the following statements applies, in these exact words:

(a)   “The company knows or has reasonable cause to believe that there is no registrable person or registrable relevant legal entity in relation to the company.” Do not do this unless you have read the article or the Companies House guidance and are certain it applies.

(b) “The company has not yet completed taking reasonable steps to find out if there is anyone who is a registrable person or a registrable relevant legal entity in relation to the company.”

(c)   “The company has identified a registrable person in relation to the company but all of the required particulars of that person have not been confirmed.”

(d)   “The company knows or has reasonable cause to believe that there is a registrable person in relation to the company but it has not identified the registrable person.”

(3)   If you have entered statement (b), (c) and/or (d), you take immediate steps to identify possible people with significant control and relevant legal entities, obtain and if necessary confirm the required details, and enter the details in the register.

Please contact Neil Moulden at DDCVS if, after reading Sandy Adirondack’s advice and/or Companies House Guidance, you are still not sure. Call 01629 812154

Increasingly, people are coming together to provide much-needed services in local communities. Village SOS (VSOS) is a 2 year Big Lottery Funded Campaign to encourage the development of community enterprise across the UK. It can offer some free project support and a small amount of funding to help with developmental costs, such as training expenses and travel costs to visit similar projects operating elsewhere. VSOS can link the project group with an experienced mentor to offer bespoke support and advice to the group.

Projects can range in size from:

  •  Large scale projects, e.g. may involve buying up publicly owned assets, developing a community energy project, taking over the management of your local pub or shop, to

  •  Small-scale projects, e.g. refurbishing a village hall in order to increase services, running a mobile library, food projects.

If you are interested in learning more about the VSOS Campaign, visit the VSOS website.

Please note: the VSOS Campaign is coming to an end in August 2016. Therefore, the opportunity is time limited and you need to act fast to benefit from the free offer.

If you already have a project idea that you would like to discuss or are uncertain about the VSOS package of support, then please contact Helena Stubbs at Rural Action Derbyshire. Direct line: 01629 592973

In August last year, we amalgamated the Health Development Fund with the community grants streams from the District Council that we administer to form the Better Derbyshire Dales Fund.

This means that although you can apply for funding towards events; play areas and village halls (in line with some of the original funding streams at the District Council) you can also apply for any activity or running cost associated with a community group that addresses health issues.

Applications to the Better Derbyshire Dales Fund are assessed quarterly with the next grants panel meeting on the 12th May 2016. We would like applications submitted by Friday 6th May 2016. If you have any question about the Better Derbyshire Dales Fund please contact Jonathan Simcock or Sarah Paisley at DDCVS on 01629 812154. Or you can download a form and guidance here

  •  Children and young people who are sick in hospital
