When cobblestones were worn down by steel wheeled carts the surface became smooth and slippery. These stones are worn jumbos that were split vertically to create a new split face for better traction. The half cobble was placed back in the street with the freshly split surface facing up. Because they were reinstalled in this manner, they often have two smooth faces.
The cobblestones can be installed smooth side up (left picture) or laid on their side to expose an original split face (right picture).
