Greetings Readers!
There are a lot of exciting things going on with The Actor's Center of Asheville right now that we are pumped to share with you. Lot's of bookings! Lot's of projects! Lot's of Workshops and Classes!
Congratulations are in order for several of our students & clients this spring. We are so proud of student, Richard Howell for signing with Bold Talent Agency. In the booking department, we are ecstatic for Robert Walker for booking his first major TV show role on Shot's Fired (which also happens to be a recurring role!), Nina Ruffini for booking her very first commercial spot, Alphie Hyorth for booking his first major motion picture role, & Alayna Dickerson for booking her first commercial spot. In addition to our first time bookers and signers, a resounding applause also goes out to Jennifer Trudrung and Penny Monroe for booking a PSA for the Southern Environmental Law Center, Jeff Alexander for booking a principal role in a Little Caesars commercial, Marisa Blake for her work last month as the IamAVL spokesperson and the host of the Music Video Asheville Awards, David MacDonald for booking a principal role in a commercial for FLS ENERGY, as well as a supporting role in an undisclosed feature film. And last but not least, congratulations to The Actor's Center of Asheville's owner and instructor, Kevin Patrick Murphy for booking an undisclosed feature film supporting role, & a recurring role on an undisclosed tv show. The Actor's Center of Asheville's owner  and instructor, Kevin Patrick Murphy appeared on The Walking Dead's Season 6 Finale this past month. Talk about a walking dead hustle! He ran, he fell, he jumped! No spoilers, but as you can guess, Kevin Patrick Murphy did his own stunts! Murphy described working on the set as "an amazingly well oiled machine. I was truly humbled and honored to work with such a  professional group of actors and crew members. The cream of the crop. It was one of the highlights of my career to date." Pictured to the left is Murphy with stars Andrew Lincoln & Chandler Riggs (Rick & Carl). If you aren't familiar with the show, The Walking dead is a survivalist story. Waking up in an empty hospital after weeks in a coma, County Sheriff Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) finds himself utterly alone. The world as he knows it is gone, ravaged by a zombie epidemic. The Walking Dead tells the story of the weeks and months that follow after the apocalypse. Based on Robert Kirkman’s hugely successful and popular comic book series, AMC’s The Walking Dead is an epic, edge-of-your-seat drama where personal struggles are magnified against a backdrop of moment-to-moment survival. What a fun kick off to spring we had here at The Actor's Center of Asheville last month! Our Teen 6-week intensive class students had a blast working with Robert Dale Walker and Kevin Patrick Murphy. A couple of the older teens had such a great time in class, that they will be joining The Actor's Center Of Asheville family this next month as they cross over into our adult classes. We are so proud of our students who presented some of their work from class on April 29th, 2016 at the Toy Boat Community Art Space in Biltmore Village.
In addition to showcasing some great talent, we also showed our support against inequality(HB2), and FOR love by printing a limited edition run of TACA T-shirts, in which a portion of the proceeds will go to Campaign For Southern Equality. Actor’s will receive a cast breakdown of roles to choose from in advance for their audition. They will then be expected to tape their auditions, and send them back to Matthew Sefick no later than June 8th. Each class is limited to 16 students per class, so be sure to secure your spot early, by clicking one of the button's above as this workshop is filling up quickly! Registration ends officially on May 30th.

Matthew Sefick, CSA is a casting director based out of Charleston, SC. In 2005 he graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Master’s Degree in Media Arts. Since college he has gained over 10 years of experience in the Film and Television Industry and is a member of the Casting Society of America as well as the Television Academy. He began working in casting in the offices of Lifetime’s hit series Army Wives and helped cast over 100 episodes of the show and was named Casting Director for the final season of the series – Season 7. Since then he has cast feature films, television movies and commercials in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama. Feeling stagnation in our careers sucks, yes. But just because our idea of how things should be unfolding isn't playing out, that doesn't mean it's time to quit. It just means that it's time to change your perspective for a minute. Remind yourself that, “Commitment in the face of conflict produces character”, & then think about the reality that there will always be obstacles in the way of pursuing our goals, whether they’re professional or personal. It's just a part of life. Does that mean you might as well stop having goals just because they are challenging? Of course not! Goals are supposed to be challenging. It's important to remember to "just keep swimming". If you are starting to wallowing in rejections, & second guess acting on your dreams, just STOP IT. STOP IT NOW. I mean, go ahead and wallow for a minute if you need to get it out, but then stop it and get back to swimming. If you stop swimming...what happens? Ya sink. Floating on the surface is always optional, but you don't get anywhere fast, and you'll likely just get a bad sunburn. We kept swimming, and we're glad we did because it helped us find you.
You must find your WHY as an actor if you truly want to pursue acting as a career. It is easier to know where to start when you know where you want to go. Is acting an investigation, hobby, or a career? Maybe you didn't ask yourself why you wanted to pursue acting when you started this path, because your why was an instinctive, organic tendency. You just felt a deep need that existed in every molecule of your body to connect to the human experience, that you couldn't explain. Regardless, if you don't know you're why, or you start to lose your why, quitting becomes that much easier. Before you throw in the towel and go back to something safe and far less taxing, ask yourself the following questions:
1. Why did you want to pursue this goal to begin with, and has anything changed? What made you commit to following this dream? Your reasons are likely still the same, maybe you've just stop believing in yourself because your attempts have yet to yield results. Ask yourself, if you push through the discomfort, will the sacrafice be worth it in the end?
2. Have you been operating with too much information? It's easy to overwhelm yourself with all the information that is available about how to become what you want to become. Maybe you've started spending to much time planning to act, than actually acting on your dream. Study...excercise you abilities in class, emerse yourself, and let the universe do the rest.
3. Did you set a S.M.A.R.T Goal? (If you are in class at The Actor's Center of Asheville, you know that every January, we start the year off by setting our SMART goals. If you haven't set a SMART goal, you may have set yourself up for failure. Before you give up, you have to really give yourself every opportunity to succeed first. Reassess, and set your goals.)
4. Are you afraid of failure?What's scary about failing? Is it the judgement we will feel from others for failing? We are our own worst critics, & can't let fear stop us from going all the way. If you give up, just when things get difficult, or uncomfortable for the first time, you are letting fear of failure win. There is a quote that comes to mind: "A Winner is just a Loser that tried one more time..."
5. Are you afraid of SUCCEEDING? If you play it safe you won’t hurt or disappoint anyone, but you also won’t help or inspire anyone. And equally important, you won’t help or inspire yourself...
