Key GMS Corridor Route in Myanmar’s Kayin State Gets Long-Awaited Upgrade

On 08 April, ADB and the Myanmar government signed a $100 million loan agreement to improve a key section of a road connecting the towns of Eindu and Kawkareik in Myanmar’s Kayin state, the last missing link of the GMS East-West Corridor.

Urban Services Enhancement on Tap for Towns Along GMS Economic Corridors

In late 2015, ADB approved assistance for Cambodia, Lao PDR and Viet Nam, totaling $170 million, to improve urban services in towns along the GMS North-South, East–West, and Southern Economic Corridors, and enhance their competitiveness.

At the first GMS Senior Officials’ Meeting on 17 February 2016, plans for this year’s 8th Economic Corridors Forum and 21st GMS Ministerial Conference were confirmed, and GMS National Coordinators reviewed important knowledge products to be delivered during the year.

Sector Updates

Environment: At the 10th Semi-Annual Meeting of the GMS Working Group on Environment in November 2015, the implementation and work priorities for the GMS Core Environment Program were reviewed. Read more »

Energy: At the 19th Regional Power Trade Coordination Committee Meeting in November 2015, updates were provided on recent cross-border power trading and development in regulatory reforms in the GMS, and technical discussions were held about development prospects for the ASEAN power sector, and PRC’s experience with regulatory reform of the power sector. Human Resource Development: At the 14th Meeting of the GMS Working Group on Human Resource Development in November 2015, discussions were held on improving regional cooperation in higher education and technical vocational education and training in the GMS. Read more.  Read more »

Transport and Trade Facilitation: At the National Transport Facilitation Committee Senior Officials’ Meeting Retreat in December 2015, GMS officials discussed progress under the GMS Cross-Border Transport Facilitation Agreement and identified priority actions to accelerate its implementation. Tourism: At the 36th Meeting of the Tourism Working Group in January 2016, senior GMS tourism officials discussed updating the GMS Tourism Sector Strategy for 2016-2026, reviewed implementation of tourism projects in the GMS Regional Investment Framework Implementation Plan, and discussed a Draft Agreement on the Establishment of the Mekong Tourism Coordinating Office.
