Round 2 Review

Still Searching

The Seniors played some great football on Saturday in our first home game for the year at GBO. Unfortunately the 'Nodders proved too strong and were able to run out victors.

Congrats to the Ressies who recorded their first win for the year with a gritty 7 point victory.

The Thirds also started their season with a game against Marcellin but were unable to get the 4 points on this occasion. Coach MacKenzie is always looking for new recruits so if you know someone who might want to have a kick, get them to call Macca.

Round two saw the Seniors play their first match for the year at home on Gordon Barnard against Mazenod. With a focus on moving the ball quickly and taking the game on, the boys were keen to put on a show in front of the home crowd.

After a fairly even start, Mazenod put through a few goals late in the first quarter to put us 4 goals down at quarter time. Tom Allwright looked dangerous up forward in his first game back for the year, Phil Bennett was terrific in the back half, and Robbie Campbell was dominating the hit outs, but we couldn't convert this into scoring opportunities.

The second quarter however, saw us play some great, fast football. We came in at half time a goal up, after holding our opponents to 1 point for the quarter. It was great to see the boys play the fast moving football we have been practicing all pre-season. Tom Kanz was busy up forward and Mitch Trait was getting plenty of it in his debut for the club.

In the second half of the game, Mazenod made the most of their chances and their very accurate goal kicking put us under a lot of pressure. 10 minutes into the last quarter the game could still have gone either way, but unfortunately our opponents stuck to their game plan were able to take the 4 points this time.

It was great to see many of our younger brigade leading from the front this week with Alex Taverner, Damien Proska and Andrew Parker all playing great games. There were many encouraging signs again this week, and we showed that our best is as good as anyone. The challenge now is to sustain that high level of play over 4 quarters. We will be looking to bounce back this week at home vs Oakleigh and get our first win for the year!

Reserves

A slow start, a steady approach and slowly the reserves overtook Mazedon. The opposition came out of the blocks with quick 3 goals. To the credit of the team, they remained calm and stuck to the game plan.

The backline continued to drive forward and in the second half the game was fought hard. We were able to have a range of goal kickers, many players contributing and under manned due to unavailable players and injury.

Corso was strong in defence, driving the ball forward. Young running the ball out of the centre providing scoring opportunities for the forwards, Powell and Bromell were strong. Cottrell tagged very well and prevented Mazenod driving the ball from our backline. Kaiser took good defensive marks, running off the half back. Crothers working hard around the packs and the ground, very good.

Goal Kickers: S. Powell 2, H. Crothers, B. Dean, S. Anjou, C. Young, M. Jenkin, T. Pepperell
Best Players: M. Bromell, C. Young, X. Troy, M. Corso, L. Campbell, M. Cottrell

Thirds

The Thirds opened up the season with a match against last years grand finalists in Marcellin. Taking them on at home was going to be a tough ask and we knew that we'd have to be competitive from the start.

With a mix of youth and experience we started the game slowly with Marcellin kicking a couple of early goals before we began to hit our straps and finished the quarter with a couple of goals to keep the margin to two goals. In the second quarter we asked the boys for endeavour and to make a contest at every opportunity and we responded.
With our midfield gaining the upper hand with some strong ruck work from Matt Todd and our on-ballers of Stayner, Daniel Dick and Tom Beresford getting there hands on the ball.

While our defence stood strong with some great work from Harry Urwin, Eastick, Warr, Pat Dennis and Harry Berry to keep their opponents under wraps and ensuring they didn't have any easy avenues to goal. Our forwards started to work in to the game kicking 5 goals and 2 behinds for the quarter thanks to some great work by Rusty, Brett Cottrell and Pete Storey.

The endeavour and contested football we asked for was delivered as we took an 8 point lead in to the main break.

In the third quarter despite matching them for the first ten minutes of the quarter unfortunately some key injuries and a couple indiscretions meant that we were down to 16 players for the last 15 minutes in which Marcellin took the opportunity to pile on 7 unanswered goals and as a consequence they were holding a 4 goal lead. Despite losing the quarter there was some great efforts from the backline who were under fire, combined with the work of Steve Clarke and Henry Allwright on the wings who continued to contest and work tirelessly for the quarter.

At the final change we asked the team to respond to our third quarter and finish off the game the way we had started it - with endeavour and work rate our aim for the last quarter. Despite our best efforts we couldn't close the gap that Marcellin had placed despite having more shots on goal then the opposition in the last and when the final siren went we had gone down by 34 points.

With plenty of opportunity for improvement it was a promising start despite the result as we had more scoring shots against a strong Marcellin side.

As we look bounce back from the loss this week and ensure we field a fullside this week to make sure we notch up a big win to start the long weekend.
A big thanks to all the players and supporters who came down to watch - as well as all the players who played.

Goal Kickers: N. Russell 3, B. Cottrell 3, D. Dick, P. Storey, M. Todd
Best Players: D. Berry, M. Todd, B. Cottrell, D. Dick, T. Stayner
