Image of the Month: 7T fMRI cortical layers
Our May Image of the Month, courtesy of Prof Lars Muckli, shows a surface reconstruction of human visual cortex overlaid with grid lines depicting cortical depths from superficial (red) to deep (purple) layers. Using high-field, high-resolution fMRI at 7 Tesla, Prof Muckli’s group showed for the first time that the brain’s internal representations of the world are fed back to superficial layers of sensory cortex.

SINAPSE Member Profile: Dr David Alexander Dickie
David Alexander Dickie is a postdoctoral researcher predominantly based in Glasgow but employed by the Brain Research Imaging Centre, Edinburgh and SINAPSE. Working under the direction of Prof Joanna M. Wardlaw CBE, David is interested in modifiable targets for neurodegeneration, e.g., lipids and lifestyle choices. Mainly using structural MRI, David designs processing pipelines for extracting the brain features associated with neurodegeneration, e.g., white matter hyperintensities. He is currently working on projects aimed at stratified diagnoses of vascular versus Alzheimer's dementia, understanding age-related brain changes and cognition (Lothian Birth Cohorts), and building reference standards for assessment of brain MRI (BRAINS Bank). As well as his academic interests, David is a director of Data Driven Analytics (http://www.dd-analytics.com/) a company specialising in customised brain image processing pipelines.
