Work underway on Sixth Form Centre

A Sixth Form Centre at Debden Park High School, Loughton, is just weeks away from completion, just days after the ‘made-to-measure’ building arrived on site.

The school launched its Sixth Form - as part of the Epping Forest District Sixth Form Consortium - last September.

Now work is well underway to create additional teaching space for the school’s Sixth Form students who currently have to share space in the main school building.

Director of Sixth Form Hayley Martin-Burns said: “It will be great for their studies, to have that appropriate space and not have to move around the school from one subject to another.

"It will also mean our LRC (Learning Resource Centre) which has been used as a temporary Sixth Form base will be fully available to the whole school again.”

Head of School Helen Gascoyne said: "The school has been waiting for this moment for a long time. We were excited when the Year 12 students started and now we are doubly excited that the building is here.”

Students are getting involved with the finer touches by having a say on the fixtures and fittings which will feature in the building which will accommodate eight classrooms, a quiet study area, common room - to accommodate meeting and social space - office accommodation for admin staff and toilets.

Year 11 student Maclove Ohemeng, the school’s Head Boy, said: “It’s great. The building will provide a place for independent study - that’s what the Sixth Form is all about.”

Head Girl Eleanor Davies said: “This makes the dream a reality. I’m looking forward to the independence and study space. I’m passionate about being able to continue my studies in a school I have grown up in.”

Executive Year 12 Head Boy Sam Latchford said: “It’s really exciting to have a building separate from the rest of the school. It makes us feel important!”

Executive Year 12 Head Girl Zoe Earwicker added: “I think it will boost everyone’s morale for exams. It will motivate everyone to do well.”

The school hopes the new building will be occupied before the end of this academic year.

The current Sixth Form has some 60 students with the role to more than double in September.
