Standardized Testing at St. Andrew's

Congratulations SAES students!! You worked hard to do your best, and your teachers are quite proud you!

The CTP4 test format was new to our students. A new format can be challenging to some students and a little disconcerting to others. Taking the achievement tests provides important practice with standardized testing; testing that most SAES students will be taking throughout their educational experience.

Test documents have been mailed to ERB for scoring, and we expect results in approximately three weeks. Ann Harris, Member Services Consultant for ERB, will be conducting a workshop for teachers in May. In addition, on May 19, 2016, she will be presenting information to St. Andrew’s parents that will help parents understand their child’s test results. She will explain what parents should keep in mind as they review their child’s scores.

Important to remember is that standardized tests do not measure a student’s initiative, motivation, or ability to persevere. They do not measure study skills, collaborative and cooperative skills, communication skills or creativity. All those skills are important for long-term success in education and life. Thus when interpreting a child’s standardized test results, it is important to keep in mind that the scores are not a summary of qualities that are needed to be a successful student, nor are they a comprehensive account of what a student knows or has learned.

Standardized tests are tools that measure how a child performed on a given day and on a given set of questions, and they are only one of the tools in the educational assessment tool kit. Used in conjunction with daily teacher observation and informal assessment, standardized tests contribute to the overall portrait of the student’s learning.

Please mark your calendars and plan to attend Ms. Harris’ parent workshop on the CTP4 standardized tests on May 19 right after Morning Exercises at 8:15 in Grace Hall, Multipurpose Room. The event is on the SAES calendar.

Class News:

1st Grade

The first graders enjoyed a walk to the Nix Library this week to nurture their love of literature. Mr. Josh read them three stories about baseball and they learned about Babe Ruth and how the first women's baseball teams were formed. They also got to create their own paper plate baseballs. Leaders are Readers!

From the Rosenberg Library:

Every parent should have received an email from me with information about participating in Scholastic's Summer Reading Challenge.  I have sent home notes with students in grades PK - 4th, also.  If you have any questions or need log in information, please send me an email or come to the library.

If you're not too tired from Jazz Festing it all weekend, please join us in the Rosenberg Library on Monday morning to set up our Summer Reading Book Fair.  We will have refreshments!  It's more fun than work!!

Summer Support- Faculty Tutors

The end of the school year is fast approaching and with it comes a welcome change – a break from the busy school schedule for all of us in the St. Andrews school community, children, parents and teachers.  The added “down time” during the summer weeks is a refueling of sorts for us all, children and adults!

In May, along with the end-of-the-year excitement for children, comes the good feeling we have as  parents and teachers when we see how much our children have grown academically, spiritually and physically/emotionally since August.  If a child has struggled in any way to achieve that growth, we do not want them to lose the gains they have made during this past school year.  This is called the risk of the summer “gap”. It is a common occurrence, but can present a real burden for some children in August when they meet their new teachers and begin the new school year.

Fortunately with parental support there is no need for a child to feel “behind” from the beginning.   Listen to your teachers!  If they are recommending summer support, whether one on one tutoring or small group work, please follow through and provide that help for your child.  On the academic front, if tutoring is recommended there are lots of options out there.  To be most effective, multiple sessions  for 3-6 weeks in the latter half of summer are best (minimum of twelve).  If the child’s summer schedule does not permit the latter half, then work with your tutor on mutually agreed upon dates prior to school’s reopening in August.   The point is to give your child the gift of added confidence that one on one tutoring can bring, especially at the beginning of a new school year.

Below are listed our own St. Andrews faculty who are available this summer to work with your children:

Angela Balkam         Middle School English
Lynda Callaway        Director of Studies
Brenda Stier             2nd Grade Teacher

Please contact the teachers at school.  Our complete list of outside tutors and specialists is available by email. Just call or email me (or stop by my office) and I will gladly send it to you. Thank you!

From the Admissions Office:

Our campus continues to be filled with prospective students visiting in Pre-Kindergarten to 8th grade and individual tours on a daily basis.  Please help us to welcome our visitors and make them feel at home and continue to help us to spread the word to parents looking for a school for their children by telling them about St. Andrew’s and encourage them to call for a tour.

From the Financial Aid Office:

Financial Aid Deadline

Final Deadline

The final deadline for applying for financial aid was Friday, April 15, 2016.  We will still accept applications and required documents. If the application or required documents are submitted past the deadline we might not be able to offer Financial Aid or the award may be reduced.  We only have a certain amount of Financial Aid to offer and meeting the deadline is vital to securing assistance.
