The Year of the CITY DOGS
May 2016

#adoptmyfoster

Less than two weeks after heading out the door as our first Adoption Ambassadors dog, Adam found his forever home. He had been waiting since September 2015.

Lucky for Adam, he caught the eye of CITY DOGS volunteer Debbie almost as soon as he arrived at the kennel and she had been taking every opportunity available to get him out for extra long walks, hamburger treats and even a couple of overnights. Clearly she had fallen in love. Adam was adopted by a family and shortly returned, and the timing was actually perfect. We had just announced the launch of our ASPCA-sponsored Adoption Ambassadors program, so Debbie stepped right up to foster Adam. In the blink of an eye, Adam was out the door with his adoption vest, individualized business cards and posters, and his own Ambassador determined to find him the best home possible. Debbie taught him some basic obedience and took him all over town, introducing him to children, cats and her co-workers to give him as much exposure as possible. It worked. Adam is now happy as can be in his new home and Debbie – well she’s missing her very special friend – but very happy that she could play such a major role in getting him adopted.  To find out how you can become an Adoptions Ambassador or for information about adopting an ambassador dog, contact Adoptions/Volunteer Coordinator Michelle Harvanek at mharvanek@city.cleveland.oh.us.

Last weekend, we sent home our second Adoption Ambassadors dog with volunteer Stephanie. Stephanie says: "Walking Pickles around the neighborhood is a dream. She doesn't pull (unless she spots a squirrel) and already knows loose leash walking. She is crate trained, housebroken, and likes people and other dogs. We're working on her tendency to nibble when overexcited. It's so much fun to witness her little quirks, like her love of playing with fabric (like my curtains or bedskirt). Her favorite place, unsurprisingly, is flung across a pile of blankets in the direct center of my bed." For more information about Pickles, contact Stephanie: stephanie.a.super@gmail.com

New CITY DOGS Note Cards Available!

Great Dogs from our Great City - That’s the theme of the newest collection of CITY DOGS note cards. Each card shows one of our beautiful CITY DOGS posing in front of a recognizable Cleveland landmark such as Cleveland Cultural Gardens, the Steelyards, or Downtown's Freedom Statue & Terminal Tower. The cards are the work of photographer Diane Ward and a dedicated team of handlers who have been arranging special outings/photo shoots for the dogs over the past several months. Look for the cards at Art FurAnimals and events throughout the summer. 100% of proceeds go to the Friends of the Cleveland Kennel’s CITY DOGS Fund.

From the Chief: New Kennel Details Released

Construction is slated to begin on the new kennel in the fall, which would place us in the new building in late 2017 or early 2018. Our current building was built in 1977 and the needs for the Division have changed drastically since then.  Much thought has gone into how people and animals will move through the building, and everyone is excited to be able to house the animals in a better, much calmer environment than what we are able to do now. Renderings of the new kennel can be viewed on Cleveland.com. With that being said, a new building is only as effective as the programs and policies being utilized. Thanks to a terrific core of volunteers who assist in kennel enrichment activities, offsite adoption events, a multitude of new programs, and support from the community, our future looks bright. We look forward to sharing this milestone with you.

Ed Jamison
Chief Animal Control Officer

Chief Jamison was recently featured on ASPCAPro talking about other changes to the division and the impact of our Sunday hours.

CITY DOGS joins Best Friends Animal Society to host The Champions

Every dog is an individual. That was the clear message when Best Friends Animal Society and CITY DOGS packed the Cedar Lee Theater for the March 9 local screening of The Champions. This inspirational documentary follows five of the dogs rescued from Michael Vick’s brutal dog fighting ring through their recovery and adoption into loving homes. Like the featured dogs, the film doesn’t look back, but focuses on the impact the Vick dogs have had – disproving the view that dogs seized from fighting rings are damaged goods that must be destroyed and showing that most can become the terrific family members they were born to be. “We were honored to be chosen by Best Friends to co-host the local screening of this important film," Chief Jamison said. “The stories of Little Red, Johnny Justice and the others reinforce our mission - to view every dog in our care as an individual and to give the public opportunities to get to know our CITY DOGS for the great dogs they are.”
If you missed the screening, you can watch the trailer and purchase a DVD or download the film for $14.99 from the Best Friends website.

Love Letters to CITY DOGS

When our volunteers spend time with our dogs, they write copious notes to help with training and socialization and ultimately to help our adoption counselors make the best possible matches.  Those notes read like love letters. We felt they needed to be shared and so we’ve compiled several of them into a book. You can purchase Can’t Help it -  I Love You: letters to CITY DOGS from the volunteers who love them enough to let them go at Art Fur Animals and other events throughout the summer. 100% of proceeds go to the Friends of the Cleveland Kennel’s CITY DOGS Fund.

Play Yard Updates!

Two off-leash play yards at the kennel got major updates this spring. With materials purchased by Friends of the Cleveland Kennel, CITY DOGS Volunteers spread 29 tons of gravel in our two large yards. Now play sessions can happen even when it's wet outside without worrying about muddy dogs (and muddy volunteers!). Friends of the Cleveland Kennel also installed a sound system in the kennel, so our dogs can listen to classical music to help calm the environment.

Adopt

There are over 50 dogs at the kennel waiting to be adopted. Peace (above) has been at the kennel for several months and is hoping to find a family of her own soon. This girl is about 5 years old and is super cuddly and affectionate. She will sit for treats and really likes cheese. She also seems to like other dogs, and met a cat and didn't chase. She will make an excellent companion.

Email citydogs@city.cleveland.oh.us if you’d like to meet this awesome girl – or any of the “Great Dogs from Our Great City”.
