An Update from The President, Mike Hanlon.
Five months into our journey as the Brumbies I was reflecting on how much I have learned about running a not for profit sports club and recognise that I still have much more to learn.
All our funds go into running the club and we do not pay any positions and rely on volunteers to operate like most sports clubs. Our volunteers are a standout group and I’m in awe of their passion and dedication! But we still need more volunteers to share the load and make our operations sustainable.
Our club launch and ground opening on Super Saturday was a stunning day with perfect weather and a buzz that many commented was a high that we should strive to replicate in future events.
The kids had a ball with Bubble Soccer, Wipe-out and an inflatable obstacle course to tire them out and give many parents a quiet night.
On field our men’s VL1 and VL reserves registered their first wins for the season, whilst our women’s VL1 and VL reserves came away with respective draws after dominating much of the play.
The only blight on the day was the women’s uniforms not arriving in time, an issue I have taken up with the national sales manager for Canterbury, but more on uniforms later.
There were so many people that made the day a huge success :
The events team of Denise Gill, Heather Gowans, Steve White, Carol Sheldon, Clare Hollingsworth and Liz Calahan
Matt Morrow and Scott for manning the webbers for the day
Hugh Hassal who ran the chocolate coin toss for much of the afternoon
John Hearn who ran the wine tasting
All who ran the BBQ on the day and there were many
Meg Kentell for her running of the cake stall and everyone who donated cakes for the cake stall and chocolate for the coin toss
And last but not least you our members as you created such a positive atmosphere for the day
To cap the day off almost $2,500 was raised, a stunning outcome!

Coaching
One of the key strategic planks for our future is providing the best possible coaching to our juniors as they are our lifeblood. I’m pleased to announce that as of April we have 8 newly qualified level 2 coaches in the club with Chris Harper, Chris Arthur, Steve White, Al Payne, Kim Shwartz, Jason Mulder and Peter Hovenden.
It is only through developing our coaching depth that we can realise the benefits of the merger.
Uniforms
Uniforms has been an issue that I have taken up with the national sales manager of Canterbury. We selected them based on past experience as a company that was dependable and provided quality goods. Whilst the quality is still there, it is highly disappointing that they have dropped the ball, with poor communications on deliveries to enable us manage your expectations. Our current forecast is for the arrival of our major orders for seniors landing with us on the week of 6th May with the junior orders to follow a week later.
Once final confirmation of order delivery time is received I will send an update for details on collection times.
Club Song
The club song is a little contentious as we look for an option that moves away from reusing elements of past club songs. We will get back to you shortly on the final decision as I am mindful that the season has started.
Code of Conduct
I am currently fielding a number of issues that have occurred over the first four games. Whilst most have been opposition incidents we have some club issues that the committee needs to deal with.
How we behave is central to our culture and how we are perceived by broader hockey community. Regardless of the competence of umpires or on field issues, we need to ensure that neither our spectators or players contribute to any given issue.
Whilst the code of conduct outlines what constitutes acceptable behaviour, it does has not have a process or framework for how we deal with reported incidents. As the clubs Inclusion and Welfare Officers, Cathy and John will be drafting a discussion document for committee consideration.
The committee will take code of conduct reports very seriously and my ask is that we set the standard as one of the key pillars of the foundation of our culture.
Registrations
As we approach the start of the junior and metro competitions we have a spike in queries and registrations. Please note that to be eligible to play both the HV and club registrations need to be completed through our web site, with a deadline of Thursday 5th May to be active in the system for team selection.
From a financial point of view if you have any concerns or issues please contact any member of the committee as we are always mindful of member circumstances
League Entry Criteria (LEC)
Now that the season is underway I will be refocussing on the LEC as I want to ensure that we have covered all the necessary off field criteria that HV have defined as the hurdle to be eligible for entry into Premier League.
Achieving premier league is an important aspect of retaining our talent as we are often seen by premier league clubs as a feeder club for their recruitment. Over the years have lost too many talented players who were looking for the next level of competition.
In essence with an on field finish in the top 4 combined with the points assigned for off field criteria should place us in striking distance of the Premier League.
Our Sponsors
And finally I would like to acknowledge our sponsors:
Evoke IT for all your website needs
The Harp of Erin, 10% of all purchases comes back to the club as a rebate
Harcourts Balwyn, 20% of the commission from any successful listing comes back to the club
Danny Lee Designs
Bread Street, supplier of bread for all our BBQ’s
Provincial Meats, supplier of sausages for all our BBQ’s
Axial Wealth Management
We will be adding more over time as the commercial team meet with prospective sponsors and our web site will be enhanced to better showcase and support our sponsors.
Match Reports
Women's Pennact C With Matt Morrow at the helm the Pen C girls had a good game at Footscray. We have the bare 11, we thought that perhaps we would only have 10...where was Jess? Still partying from Saturday night's 'Bad combinations' party...no one knew... but then luckily she turned up with about 1 minute to go and we were back to the bare 11.
We had a few people doubling up from Saturday who had also been partying to the morning and a few girls who knew they had to turn around and play another game after; however, we all did well, we made some good transitions across the middle and Eliza found out how to play left half. G-Box was a strong right well drilled half and we were in safe hands with Alyson and Amy in the back along with Emma as GK. The forward line kept Footscray under pressure, Jess weaved her away around the forwards, and Claire and Emma as the inners, were quick to intercept their passes. Meg and Taylor on the wings learnt a little more about a press and had some good opportunities to score. Who scored...not sure...cant remember but we won. Brumbies 3 v Footscray 0
Men's Pennant D KBH Brumbies 4 def Brunswick 1 at the SHC. Game started a little sluggish on our behalf, and a few questionable calls! A brain freeze maneuver by Dave Sheldon saw Brunswick consolidate a corner! 1-1. Moving into a higher gear we successfully scored 3 more goals to complete the victory 4-1. Hopefully next week we can win in our Brumbies uniforms! Goal Scorers 1 goal each to Rob Williams, Trist Harris, Andy Prophet & Dave Sheldon. Well done again guys :-)

Men's Pennant F
F Troop took on Croydon Ranges on Sunday afternoon at Fortress Elgar. The light rain made the ground just right to play on as the ball rolled beautifully.
Back to full strength we agreed to stick to our game plan and team rules. We started really well sharing the ball around and were 2 zip after 22 minutes.
Hmmm … 2 for 22 …
Croydon then scored two good goals just before half time. We were disappointed about the 2nd as we focus on locking the game down after we concede.
Croydon scored shortly after the break but we didn’t flinch. This time we did lock the game down and stuck to what we do well.
Sustained pressure saw an equalizer to ChuckE. We created good chances after this and if we continue to play in this manner we will win a lot of games.
Post-match was shared with the Croydon lads around Fitzy’s esky (seeing is believing) discussing Seinfeld comedy gold including this one
Club News
Victoria team selection and U13 Development team selection
Well done to Isaac Noble who has been selected into the U13 Development Program. The program provides selected players with the opportunity to refine existing skills and work on targeted skills required to perform well at U13 Nationals. There will be a combination of skill development, modified games and full field match play throughout the program.
Well done also to Ben White, Alistair Payne and and Luke Jackson who have been selected for the U18 Boys Victorian State Teams. Fantastic effort for all your hard work.
Event Round up
The KBH and TEM PRESENT: TWO TOWNS event was successful. The theme was 'bad combinations', and there were many. There was some great costumes, our very own Brumbie player from Women's Vic League player Alice was awarded best costume (see image below, Alice on the left). The dance floor went off and when Darryl Braithwaite 'Horses' came on the two clubs combined for a sing along. Thanks to Maddie who sold tickets to the Brumbies. Make sure you get along to the next social event.
