The next meeting of the Ancient Coin Club of Los Angeles will take place Sunday May 8, 2016 in the Community Room at the Sherman Oaks Galleria starting at 1:00 PM. The Sherman Oaks Galleria is located northwest of the intersection of the Ventura and San Diego Freeways at 15301 Ventura Boulevard (at Sepulveda Boulevard), in Sherman Oaks. Park in the Galleria parking lot (we validate your parking). The Community Room is behind the escalator on Level 1 of the rotunda, one floor below the cinema.
In honor of Mother's Day, the May 8 meeting will feature “Mythical Moms and Daughters”. Roger Burry asks that members bring a coin portraying a goddess who is a mother to show and talk about. If you don’t have a “Mother Goddess” bring a coin with a daughter goddess.
LAST MEETING
The April 10, 2016 meeting was brought to order by ACCLA President Ken Friedman at 1:22 PM. Barry Rightman gave his Treasurer's Report. Secretary Michael Connor gave an update on the ACCLA web site and social media outreach. We now have 1,059 likes on facebook. Vice-President and program coordinator Roger Burry gave a rundown of the upcoming programs.
Merrill Gibson gave an extensive review and update on membership development and related actions with a handout. It was agreed that ACCLA should rejoin the California State Numismatic Association with a three year subscription. There was wide discussion of advertising, marketing items, brochures and other outreach materials. Because of the time constraint due to the few monthly meetings left before the June meeting at the ANA, President Ken Friedman established a committee to review designs etc. composed of Merrill Gibson, Denea Buckingham, Betty Eiseman, and Michael Connor.
President Ken Friedman reported that there were some management changes at the Galleria. We will now have to pay a $10 monthly internet access charge.
Following the conclusion of the business meeting a lively auction of books and coins was held. The next auction will be in July.
The April meeting presentation was on Vercingetorix, focusing on his battles with Julius Caesar. It was a multi-media presentation well put together by Roger Burry. He was joined by reenactor David Michaels of Legion VI and Heritage Auctions talking about the differences between Roman and Gallic armor. The videoVercingetorix & Caesar - Showdown in Gaul followed, and Randy Butler discussed his coins related to the period. Great presentation!
