Each month, we talk with celebrities, industry figures, cruise lovers and crew about their passion for cruising. This month, we talk with Captain Belinda Bennett aboard the Wind Star, who joins a growing number of women now at the helm of cruise ships around the world.

What did you want to be when you were little?
I wanted to be a marine biologist in my younger years. I guess I always had a passion for the sea!
What qualities must someone possess to become a good cruise ship captain?
You have to be a good communicator – able to both talk and listen. You also need to be visible to both guests and the crew.
What are your three top priorities as a Windstar master?
That my guests and crew are safe, with the guests having an enjoyable and memorable time. I also want to ensure the crew are happy and content – only then can they provide the best service to our guests.
What are your three favourite ports-of-call and why?
Just three? I so love the beautiful Dalmatian coast and Sorrento in Italy where I have a personal tradition of buying Italian leather handbags! In Portoferraio in Elba, you can find me eating the best gelato on the planet.
How does a guest get to have dinner with you at the Captain’s Table?
Sail on Windstar several times! Repeat guests are normally invited to dine at the Captain’s Table, and I love meeting Windstar guests in this special tradition.

The River Danube
Cruise Express Travel Specialist Julie Tevardy was invited recently to sail aboard Scenic’s newly christened river ship, Scenic Amber. Here Julie shares the top drawcards of her Danube river cruise between Passau and Vienna.

Passau - A must in this medieval city is the Cathedral of St Stephen - a baroque masterpiece which houses a 17,000 pipe organ - the largest in the world.
Linz / Salzburg - You’ll love Scenic’s ‘Sound of Music Experience’, visiting many sights from the film. In Salzburg, head for a café and try delicious ‘sacher torte’ chocolate cake.
Wachau Valley - Durnstein-Melk - If you want to be active, Scenic offers bikes to ride along the river here while the ship cruises. In Durnstein, try the apricot schnapps and warm apricot strudel, then head to the castle to walk it off. The Melk Abbey offers amazing views and the hot chocolate in the pavilion outside is the best I’ve ever had!
Vienna - We haggled for a horse and carriage ride through this magnificent city and though it still wasn’t cheap, it was worth it. Scenic offered a wonderful evening of Austrian classical music at the Palace Lichtenstein.
Bratislava - The capital of Slovakia is a smaller version of Vienna. Here, we tried the national dish of bryndzove halusky - delicious dumplings with cheese and bacon which we washed down with Pilsner beer at Maximilian Delikateso in the main square - another experience not to be missed.

Visit our dedicated River Cruising page for all the latest deals or call Julie for advice about a Scenic cruise.

Duck at Sea
Our fine-feathered friend joined Hardy in Europe last month. He attended moving services at the Western Front towns of Villers-Bretonneux and Le Hamel which Australian Diggers famously saved from German occupation during World War I. Duck is pictured below left, with the Mayor of Le Hamel (left), and Hardy standing at rear. Our group is pictured below right at Villers-Bretonneux on Anzac Day.

Post it!
Bring a pack of coloured, sticky Post-it notes so you can leave messages on your cabin mirror, door or desk for your room steward, partner or cabin mates onboard.

“On behalf of my three friends and I who cruised from Sydney to Hong Kong on Queen Victoria in March, I would like to thank Trish and all of Cruise Express for looking after us. I have booked with Cruise Express for several years because they just give you good service. I can rely on them and they listen to what your preferences on holiday are.”

Jokes Afloat
A couple in their late 60s were heading to dinner in the main dining room of their cruise ship. On the way, hand-in-hand, they walked past the ship’s fine-dining specialty restaurant. “Oh my goodness, the aromas coming from that restaurant are just amazing,” exclaimed the wife. “The food in there smells exquisite. How delightful!” The husband thought to himself: “You know, I love my wife and I’m a loving husband so to heck with it, I’m going to give her a treat today.” And with that he walked her past the restaurant again!
