Susie met with Paul Johnson, Director, LRT Coordination, City of Hamilton and Andrew Hope, Director, Light Rail Transit on Tuesday and they unveiled the LRT design plans. Below are some key notes taken from the meeting:
The closest stop will be located between Mary St. & Catharine St., the next one after that will be at Victoria. Another stop will be located at Gore Park.
From John St. to Wellington there will be one lane of east-bound traffic on the south side through International Village.
2-way LRT will run on the north side.
Access to businesses for deliveries will be on the north side and will have to be through the alleyway.
The city and Metrolinx will also assess options for loading access on side streets on the north side of King St. E. (ie, Mary, Ferguson).
2-way traffic will pick up again at Wellington.
West bound traffic ends at Wellington and picks up again at Catharine.
Side streets such as Ferguson, Walnut & Mary will be blocked at King on the north side so there will be no through way traffic onto King from side street on north sides. Right turns onto King St. eastbound will be permitted from the south side.
There will be no on-street parking on King St. anymore.
The city will be looking at parking plans in our area.
Sidewalks on the north side will be much wider from 2.5m (estimate) to 4-4.5m (estimate).
They will be working with the BIA and its members on the streetscape and will also be working on improving the alleyways.
After public consultation, this plan will go for final environmental assessment from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in Spring of 2017 but no significant changes to the alignment are anticipated.
The next LRT Sub-Committee meeting is being held on Monday, May 2nd at 3:00pm at City Hall in the Council Chambers. Please feel free to attend.
