On Memories and Non-Attachment
In addition to the budding springtime of growth and renewal, this time of year seems to bring up thoughts of loved ones passed. It was 2 years ago that my beloved Mocha died, and I know others who have lost loved ones around this time of year. And of course, there's Memorial Day at the end of May, which offers me a moment of reverence and remembrance of those who've died in the service of our country. In our practice, we talk about concepts of non-attachment and not dwelling on the past. Our practice teaches us to be aware in the present moment. However, attention on the present moment doesn't negate all the past moments that brought us to the present. It's important to remember the past, with an energy of non-attachment to it. I still grieve for the loss of Mocha, and yet I work to find presence in that grief. It's within that presence that I find contentment with my present self. I count myself fortunate to not have lost a loved one in war, but I know many who have. While I wasn't born during the time of the Vietnam war, when I visit the memorial wall in DC, I always become overwhelmed with emotion. It is these memories of our past - as a person, as a country - that shape who we are in this moment. So we can choose to allow those memories to teach us in a nonjudgmental fashion, or become so non-attached that we lose sight of the lessons learned. We work on the mat to observe the conditioning we've developed during our lifetime, and soften the conditional responses. This allows us to be present, without imprisonment of the past or expectations of the future. I encourage you to use your memories (pleasant and painful) for growth and nourishment, to uncover your conditionings (samskaras), and offer death to the impressions that no longer serve you. And in offering that death, honour the memory of what you've released without the burden of being bound by it.

Facial Yoga with Sylvia

Facial Fitness: Facial exercises and massage to restore and maintain a youthful appearance, naturally.

We go to the gym and yoga studio to keep our bodies fit. We understand that if "you don't use it, you lose it." If we don't work the muscles, they get weaker and softer. But we seem to forget that our faces are covered with muscle tissue as well as the rest of our body. This means that if we don't work the muscles of the face, they get weaker and softer.

The face naturally begins to wrinkle and sag as we age, and most people accept this with resignation. Alternatively, some choose chemical or surgical solutions. Facial fitness, however, can be restored and maintained with exercise and massage. The muscles of the face are small, and they respond quickly to stimulation. It's easy to learn, and it doesn't take much time.

Come join us for an hour of lecture, facial exercise, massage and relaxation.
