James is an outstanding scientific leader and highly credentialed ambassador for EMBL Australia within the EMBL global network. Together, Professor Whisstock, the EMBL Australia Council and the Secretariat team are looking forward to building on the strengths of EMBL Australia and escalating Australia’s profile and reach within the EMBL global network. The Council of EMBL Australia has announced that the Monash University submission, nominating Professor James Whisstock to the role of EMBL Australia Scientific Head with the Secretariat to be based in the Faculty of Biomedical and Psychological Sciences, Monash University was successful.
 Professor James Whisstock, is a highly regarded research scientist with an extensive publication record. James is based at Monash University where he is currently a National Health and Medical Research Council Senior Principal Research Fellow and Scientific Director of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Advanced Molecular Imaging.

The Bioinformatics Resource Australia – EMBL, is now EMBL ABR (Australian Bioinformatics Resource).
Late last month EMBL Australia concluded that the old BRAEMBL name would be changed in favour of EMBL-ABR i.e. EMBL Australian Bioinformatics Resource. The name change is to transition to the Australian Bioinformatics Resource, but it is business as usual.

EMBL Australia will be offering up to ten travel grants for students to attend the EMBL PhD Symposium in Heidelberg, Germany. This year the EMBL PhD Symposium, will be held at the EMBL Advanced Training Centre, EMBL Heidelberg, 17 - 19 November 2016. The theme this year is Life by Numb3rs: Towards Quantitative Biology. EMBL Australia, in partnership with Australian National University (College of Medicine, Biology and Environment) and The John Curtin School of Medical Research will be hosting an EMBL Australia showcase in Canberra this year. The EMBL Australia showcase is a free public event, and is the perfect opportunity for early career researchers to hear how the EMBL Australia researchers are contributing to Australia’s research output and to hear internationally recognised stars.
