This month, we're introducing the final new addition to the 2016 AAO Board of Directors. Meet Peter Murray, Chairman of New London Architecture. Peter's vast experience with architectural communications spans books, magazines, exhibitions, firm consulting and advising the Mayor of London on the city's urban design. - The Architectural League of New York honors former mayor Michael R. Bloomberg with the President's Medal for his commitment to design excellence. Related: Architect Magazine uses the Salt Shed in New York City (pictured above) as a case study on how municipal governments can support good design, delving into the differing approaches of the current and former administrations.
- Caroline Stevens launches a crowdfunding campaign to start Doors Open Rhode Island. Her Embark Fellowship from Brown University will match funds raised. Take a minute to watch the promo video and consider donating.
- May is Preservation Month. While the National Trust for Historic Preservation offers a #ThisPlaceMatters toolkit that you're likely familiar with, we also had fun browsing #BeerSavesPlaces, a hashtag about breweries revitalizing historic buildings and neighborhoods.

Competitions by AAO Members

- Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) launches the seventh annual Regent Street Windows competition, which pairs architects with retailers to design storefront window displays on view to 1.2 million people per week. Installations will coincide with the London Design Festival in September. Pictured above, the Brooks Brothers 2014 window by Squire and Partners.
- After de-installing 650,000 white plastic balls from The Beach installation, the National Building Museum partnered with Dupont Underground on Re-Ball, a design competition to reuse the balls on the site of a former underground streetcar station. The winner, Hou de Sousa, will assemble them into building blocks for visitors to reconfigure.

- As walking tour season starts, Boston by Foot celebrates its 40th year of bringing the city's stories to life. Pictured above, the first Boston by Foot class in front of City Hall in 1977.
- The Chicago Architecture Foundation celebrates 50 years and 10 million people served.
- The District Architecture Center celebrates its fifth anniversary. A unique feature of their celebration event: a live stream to the beehive they recently installed on the roof of the building.

The Significance of MoMA's Architecture & Design Galleries
|
|
|
When the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) announced it would be closing its dedicated architecture and design galleries, there was a media outcry that architecture's place in museum settings is being marginalized. The Museum responded, assuring that items from the A&D collection will remain on view, but that the current expansion plans allow for a shift to integrated exhibitions instead of medium-specific galleries. We found Fast Company's article "A Debate is Raging in the Museum World - And Design Is at the Center" to provide an interesting take on the history of discipline-specific curatorial categorization and whether or not this change will make design and architecture at MoMA more accessible.

- Metropolis Magazine's 50 Books to Read This Spring includes a category of architecture and design books especially for children and young adults. Pictured above, an illustration of Ray Eames from Mid-Century Modern Women.
- The International Union of Architects (UIA) announces that the next round of Golden Cubes Awards will be presented in 2017, and design education work from August 2014 to March 2017 will be eligible for submission.
- There's a new award to recognize excellence in studio programs at the university level. Architect Magazine announced the Studio Prize, which will award $20,000 to students whose work was included in the winning studio course submissions. Entry deadline is June 17.
