Fundamentally Children
30th April, 2016
Colour, shape and pattern recognition is important for maths skills and even reading.

That's because recognising patterns and similarities helps children distinguish between numbers and letters, and learn to predict what might come next. Read on for play ideas to support your child's recognition skills.
Toys and Play
Babies can learn to tell the difference between shapes and colours with colourful toys, colouring and shape matching games, and shape sorters. Pattern recognition can be practised with activities like threading beads, and listening to music (where the pattern is the different rhythms and pitches).

Apps and Digital
Apps can give children a fun way to match shapes and colours, e.g. by dragging the shape to the right outline. They can give children help when they get stuck and rewards (e.g. praise) for every right answer. These apps can also help develop hand-eye coordination, and some help children learn the names of the shapes/colours too.
